Synopsis
Giuliana Hermil is a woman settled in the conventionalism of a marriage she feels broken, she has long suspected that her husband, Tullio Hermil, has a mistress. The latter, acclimated to a philosophy of enjoyment and pleasure, devotes himself to training in fencing, to reading, and to his passionate love, his mistress Teresa Raffo. Tullio's desire for his wife will not spark until he learns of her relationship with a young writer named Filippo d'Arborio. When social pressure and jealousy get the better of him, the lost carnal passion will emerge, but a tragic event will occur: Giuliana becomes pregnant by Filippo.

Critics' reviews
- "'The Innocent' is a beautifully made melodrama, whose elaborate and operatic moral dilemmas turn on issues that are curiosities today."
- "Director Luchino Visconti, a giant of modern Italian cinema, died three years ago, just before this film was completed. Too bad: The final U.S. version clearly lacks the master's touch."
- "Visconti's last film strikes me as arguably the greatest of his late works apart from The Leopard -- a withering autocritique of masculine vanity and self-delusion."
