Synopsis

Delusions of Grandeur is a period comedy/farce, set in 17th Century Spain and based (quite loosely) on Victor Hugo's play "Ruy Blas". Don Salluste (Louis de Funes) is a reprehensible Minister of Finance who is hated by both the people and the Queen. She develops a case against him and manages to have the King drive Salluste out of his royal court and exile him to the countryside. Determined to exact revenge, Salluste enlists his valet, Blaze (Yves Montand), to impersonate his nephew, Count Cesar to romance the Queen and create a scandal. Ironically, Blaze really does fall in love with the Queen and manages to get himself ensconced into the Royal Court, setting up what will inevitably be a reckoning in the future!
