Synopsis

After the death of her husband, Mercedes, decides to leave the countryside and return to Madrid. On the train she meets a certain Madame Dupont, a variety artist who counts among her talents a special kind of fortune-telling. She has the ability to look into a person’s past and discover what their lives might have been if one thing or another had been different. In Mercedes’s case, Madame Dupont discovers a moment in which destiny offered the choice of two men—one a hotheaded sculptor, the other a solid, well-off, respectable citizen. On a rainy day, Mercedes shared a cab with the latter, and now she’s a widow heading back to Madrid. Perhaps she ought to look up that sculptor. . . Based on Neville’s own screenplay, Life Hanging By a Thread, has an offbeat, magical-realism quality, as Mercedes discovers that fate might have more in store for her than she ever imagined.
