What is a Computer Cracker? (original) (raw)

Last Updated : 23 Jul, 2025

Computer Cracking is where someone gains unauthorized access to our computer systems or networks. Imagine One day we open our Computer or mobile phone and we find all our data and personal information is lost or stolen. It's a very frightening thought but a sad and real possibility in today's digital world. This has become a growing concern that affects not only individuals but businesses, organizations, and governments all around the world.

So today we will be exploring Computer Crackers, the process of Computer Cracking, types of Crackers, the Difference between a Hacker and a Cracker, Types of Cracking attacks, and the Measures we should take to stay safe online.

What is a Computer Cracker?

The term Computer Cracker has become an outdated term, it was used to describe anyone who broke into a computer system or network, bypassed passwords hacked to steal the data, or breached computer security. Usually, they are motivated by monetary gains, malicious intent, or just for the challenge. Unlike Ethical Hackers, who might work to identify and fix security gaps for any organization, Crackers use their skills illegally to gain unauthorized access to systems for stealing sensitive information, personal gain, or taking control over systems for monetary gains.

Computer Crackers use certain tools and methods to breach and break into system security, like Brute Force attacks, Phishing attacks including White, Malware, Password Cracking, etc. Their actions might cause serious consequences that include loss of personal and sensitive information, financial loss, and damage to the reputation of an organization or corporation. Therefore it's important to learn the difference between a hacker and a cracker along with strong security measures to stay safe online and protect against these cyber attacks.

Difference Between Hacker vs Cracker

Hackers Crackers
Are Ethical (white hat) Are Malicious (black hat)
Improves security from inside the organization Steals data, disrupts systems
They work in an organization to help protect their data and give them expertise in internet security. These are the people from which hackers protect organizations.
Hackers share the knowledge and never damage the system. If they found any loophole they just deleted the data or damaged the data.
Hackers are the ethical professionals. Crackers are unethical and want to benefit themselves from illegal tasks.
Hackers program or hack to check the integrity and vulnerability strength of a network. Crackers do not make new tools but use someone else tools for their cause and harm the network.
Hackers have legal certificates with them e.g. CEH certificates. Crackers may or may not have certificates, as their motive is to stay anonymous.
They are known as White Hat Hackers or Saviors. They are known as Black Hat or Evildoers
Examples: Car hacking, cybersecurity research, and bug bounties. Examples: Bank fraud, identity theft, and cyber espionage.

Types of Computer Crackers

There are 3 types of Computer Crackers mainly:

**1. Script Kiddies: Script Kiddies is the term used by inexperienced individuals, who lack the expertise in hacking and use pre-existing scripts and tools to attack the systems and networks. They lack the knowledge to develop their tools and methods, making them work just for fun or to gain recognition.

**2. Black Hat Crackers: Black Hat Hackers are very experienced individuals, with proper skills which they use for certain illegal activities and breach the computer systems for their gains, monetary gains, stealing of sensitive and personal information.

**3. White Hat Crackers: White Hat Hackers or Ethical Hackers are individuals who organizations, businesses, or governments hire to find and report vulnerabilities in the system's security and provide solutions to that.

Types of Cracking Attacks

There are many types and categories of cracking attacks in the cyber security world, targeting the vulnerabilities of computer systems and networks.

Mainly there are these **3 main types of Cracking attacks:

1. **Password Cracking: Password Cracking is the most popular and simplest type of hacking when hackers try to guess or crack your login credentials and passwords, which might give them access to your account leading to financial loss, sensitive data breach, and legal consequences. For example, if a hacker cracks your password, he can get access to your personal information, such as financial details, sensitive information, legal documents, etc.

There are many methods and techniques used in Password Cracking, some of them include:

2. **Software Cracking and Piracy: Software Cracking and Piracy is another form of hacking that involves altering the security mechanism in software, so they do not have any license restrictions. They often use these cracked versions of software to install malware or steal user data.

Common ways of Software Cracking are:

**3. Network and System Exploitation: Network and system exploitation is the type of hacking attack that involves breaking into a local system or network or exploiting some vulnerability in a computer system. It is commonly known as Network cracking or WEP cracking, which targets poorly secured networks.

  1. **Zero-day exploits, A Cyberattack in which an attacker takes advantage of unknown or unaddressed security flow in the system's hardware, software or firmware.
  2. **Man-in-the-Middle Attack: A form of cyber attack in which hacker exploits weak web-based protocols, inserting themselves in between the communication channels, stealing the data and information
  3. **SQL injection attack: It is by Done Injecting malicious code into a website to access sensitive information.
  4. **Buffer Overflow Attack: Overloading the application buffer with data to gain unauthorized access.
