The series premiere of The Nevers got off to a solid start on HBO Sunday — particularly with streaming users, who made up a sizable portion of the Joss Whedon-created show’s first night audience. The series finale of Shameless posted its biggest linear audience since the season 11 premiere. CBS’ 60 Minutes led primetime on the broadcast networks with an assist from the final round of the Masters golf championship.

The Nevers racked up “just over” 1.4 million viewers via its on-air premiere, two replays on HBO and streaming on HBO Max, according to HBO. That puts it on par with the night one tallies for The Undoing and Lovecraft Country (both 1.4 million) last year.

HBO says the show set a record for streaming viewers of an HBO premiere on HBO Max, which bears out via the Nielsen on-air numbers: Both The Undoing (676,000 viewers) and Lovecraft Country (760,000) had bigger on-air viewership than the 548,000 for The Nevers.

Shameless closed its 11-season run with 695,000 linear viewers, the most since its season premiere in December. Cross-platform viewing pushed the finale up to a season high of 1.51 million viewers, per Showtime.

The final round of the Masters averaged 9.45 million viewers for CBS, its lowest figure to date (excluding last year’s pandemic-delayed tournament, played in November opposite NFL games). 60 Minutes drew 8.74 million viewers and a 0.94 rating among adults 18-49, up considerably from a week earlier.

American Idol was the top entertainment show in primetime Sunday, with a 0.8 in the 18-49 demographic and 6.09 million viewers. A day earlier, Saturday Night Live led all of primetime and late night with a 1.04 in the key ad demo and 5.18 million viewers.
