Art Bridges is a new foundation dedicated to expanding access to American art.
About us
Art Bridges is a foundation that shares outstanding works of American art with those that have limited access to our country’s most meaningful works. Art Bridges organizes exhibitions of American art for display at public and academic art museums of all sizes. These exhibitions draw from Art Bridges’ growing collection and partner institutions. The exhibitions supported by Art Bridges are engaging, content-rich, and include in-depth educational and interpretive materials. They range from single-object loans to fully developed thematic exhibitions, and include support for programming, audience engagement, and meaningful evaluation. Art Bridges is deeply interested in furthering work that is innovative and experimental; multi-disciplinary; and audience-building.

- Recently, our Cohorts Manager Camille Kulig joined representatives from nine Pennsylvania museums at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Cohort’s final convening, and we can’t get over this lovely group photo in front of the new Palmer Museum of Art! The Palmer hosted the convening in its state-of-the-art, 73,000-square-foot building located within The Arboretum at Penn State University. The inspiring space, which opened last June and seamlessly integrates art, architecture, and nature, was a perfect location to gather, discuss exhibitions, share Learning & Engagement insights, and explore potential future collaborations. The Philadelphia Museum of Art Cohort, one of the first in our Cohort Program, launched in 2018 to share American art from the museum’s holdings across the state via its eight cohort members — which in addition to the Palmer, includes the Allentown Art Museum, The Demuth Museum, the Erie Art Museum, the James A. Michener Art Museum, the The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, the Reading Public Museum, and The Trout Gallery at Dickinson College. To date, the cohort has produced 25 art sharing projects, featuring textiles, paintings, time-based media, photography, and more. We are so proud of how these museums have worked together to engage their communities in meaningful art experiences, and we look forward to seeing what else they have up their sleeves!
- As we approach the opening of “Julie Green: The Last Supper” at the Boise Art Museum on November 30, we invite you to reflect on a powerful exhibition that explores the final meal requests of individuals on death row in the United States through approximately 1,000 hand-painted ceramic plates. The monumental installation—the largest showing of Green’s artwork to date—emphasizes our universal need for food and the societal rituals associated with it, sparking a human connection to deepen empathy for imprisoned people and encourage discussion on capital punishment. This exhibition, which will span the museum’s three central gallery spaces, is the first stop on a nationwide tour of the artwork, made possible with support from our Partner Loan Network. Melanie Fales, Executive Director of the Boise Art Museum, says, “We hope this artwork encourages thoughtful dialogue in our community and provides opportunities to consider the ways artists make visible our societal beliefs and values.” And we couldn’t agree more! - We are thrilled to announce a meaningful new partnership with the Housatonic Museum of Art at Connecticut State Community College Housatonic that marks a pioneering effort to integrate student-led programming with professional, community-based art education! In honor of Native American Heritage Month and as part of a collaborative project with our Learning & Engagement team, the museum will present “Storytelling through the Art of Julie Buffalohead,” a free community event centered around Buffalohead’s “Resurrection.” The allegorical painting is currently on loan from our collection and on view at the community college. The event will feature an artmaking workshop led by Darlene Kascak, Educational Outreach Ambassador at the Institute for American Indian Studies and a Schaghticoke Tribal Nation storyteller, who will guide participants in creating memory bead necklaces. Meanwhile, Dr. Royce K. Young Wolf (Hiraacá, Nu’eta, and Sosore, ancestral Apsáalooke and Nʉmʉnʉʉ)—the inaugural Assistant Curator of Native American Art at Yale University Art Gallery and the Collection Manager of the Native North American and Indigenous Collection at the Yale Peabody Museum—will facilitate a discussion on the cultural significance of Buffalohead’s artwork and her broader impact as an Indigenous artist and member of the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma. Since our inaugural 2019 collaboration, “Vantage Points: Contemporary Photography from the Whitney Museum of American Art,” we’ve watched the Peoria Riverfront Museum flourish into a cultural hub where creativity and connection intersect. Our journey together has been full of meaningful moments—most recently, the September opening of “Glenn Ligon: I Am Somebody.” At the heart of this contemporary art exhibition is “Untitled (I Am Somebody),” which is on loan from our very own collection and is part of the artist’s renowned Door Paintings series. The work references a poem that was written by civil rights activist Rev. William Holmes Borders in the 1950s and later popularized by Rev. Jesse Jackson. On November 1, the Peoria Riverfront Museum will present a grouping of artworks from Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art through our Partner Loan Network in "Solitude: The Necessity of Art,” marking the eighth exhibition and 15th project in our five-year partnership. We are deeply grateful for the Peoria Riverfront Museum’s unwavering commitment to fostering community engagement and presenting world-class American art. We look forward to many more years of collaboration! - We are excited to celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments of two artists in our collection, Mark Bradford and Alex Katz, who are both 2023 National Medal of Arts recipients! This award represents the highest honor bestowed upon artists and arts patrons by the U.S. federal government. President Biden presented medals to the 2022 and 2023 recipients in a private ceremony at the White House earlier this week, recognizing 20 individuals or groups for their contributions to the “excellence, growth, support, and availability of the arts” in our country. Among the recipients are other visual artists, photographers, filmmakers, singers, musicians, actresses, producers, and arts leaders—including Carrie Mae Weems, Steven Spielberg, Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah, Idina Menzel, and Randy Batista—as well as the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The 2022 and 2023 National Humanities Medals were presented at the same ceremony, honoring individuals like social justice philanthropist and Art Bridges board member Darren Walker and the late chef and author Anthony Bourdain, as well as organizations like the Mellon Foundation. Our heartfelt congratulations to all the honorees! https://lnkd.in/g7bKjbZe

Sometimes museums go where their existing donors lead, and sometimes museums can chart a new direction and gain donor support for it. With inspiration from Art Bridges Foundation and others, the Whitney Museum of American Art is showing that donors (including one very generous artist, Julie Mehretu) are willing to support not just new buildings and collections but increased public access. Whitney Director Scott Rothkopf said it just right when he told reporter @Kelly Crow: “In any museum, you’re choosing what to spend money on—be it storage or loans or whatever—but getting more young people in here is the most meaningful thing I can think of to subsidize.”
