Founded in 1987 and based in Lynchburg, Centra is a regional, nonprofit healthcare system serving more than half a million people across central and southside Virginia. Our established network of facilities and services includes four hospitals, five medical centers, a nationally award-winning cardiovascular care center, and a cancer center, as well as 15 primary care and various specialty practices as part of our Centra Medical Group. We also offer a wide range of senior, post-acute, and mental health care services. Yesterday we held the "Topping Off" ceremony, where we put the last beam in place for the Centra Langhorne Medical Center! As part of Centra's multi-year modernization plan, the five-story medical office building will be located near Lynchburg General Hospital’s campus. It will streamline access to healthcare services and house specialty care, including Centra’s comprehensive Brain and Spine programs and other surgical specialists. Fun fact: In a construction topping off ceremony, when the last steel beam is raised to the highest point of the building, a small evergreen tree (known as the construction “Christmas tree”) is attached to the beam. In the U.S., an American flag is also often put on the opposite end of the beam. The evergreen tree signifies the safe completion of the framing of the structure and a wish for continued good luck for the future of the building project— and its eventual occupants.
