Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is on a mission to deliver clean fusion energy to the planet fast enough to matter for humanity’s biggest challenges. It’s urgent. The gap between the energy we need and the energy we have is widening every day. Fusion is a critical part of the energy transition away from fossil fuels, a new chapter for the world’s energy supply. We’re committing to delivering fusion power plants and a full-fledged fusion energy industry as we’ve delivered on other promises. Like the world’s strongest high-temperature superconducting magnet, the game-changing technology that’s making commercial fusion energy a reality. “It’s easy to fall into a trap that because energy has been done a certain way, it will always be done that way.” Today at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, our CEO Bob Mumgaard said our work to bring fusion energy to the grid means it’s also time to rethink how we power our homes, vehicles, and industries. WEF attracts the world’s movers and shakers from government and business, and Bob shared the stage with notable figures like Kimberly Budil, the director of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Sophie Hermans, Minister of Climate Policy and Green Growth of the Netherlands; Hans Kobler, Founder of Energy Impact Partners; and Xin Baoan, Chairman of China' Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization. Here’s some of what Bob had to share: • Fusion will change energy. Instead of being limited by resources, energy will tap into technology industry advantages like steadily improving products and dropping prices. • The world’s top brains are tackling energy, filling university programs and launching startups. “The energy sector is actually the hardest sector to get into at the hardest universities. We're going to see a pipeline fill and then 10 years from now, a whole bunch of technologies to pick from.” • Fusion regulations exemplify the benefits that a fresh look can bring. “Five years ago, there was no regulation. That didn’t stop us. We started to build a plant and we said we'll figure it out. Now that regulation is set, and it's a completely different regulation in the United States than nuclear power. It’s much more innovation-forward.” • Fighting climate change isn’t necessarily a zero-sum game in which progress in one area means problems in another. There are plenty of questions about the future of energy — and fusion power could settle many of them. It'll be a reliable, round-the-clock complement to wind and solar power, filling the gaps when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing. That's what we need as electrifying cars, homes, and industries leads to a rise in electricity generation by 30% to 76% by 2050, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Here's why fusion is a good fit for the grid's needs. For one thing, it’ll be adaptable. It'll be able to generate steady baseload power or ramp up and down to follow the daily electricity use patterns. Our ARC power plants can be flexibly located, for example built where old coal plants once stood to reuse existing infrastructure and reduce the need for new power lines. With abundant fuel, the spread of fusion power will be governed more by energy demand than by resource limits that are so common in the energy industry today. We’re ramping up our commercialization work at Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS). In the newest of our twice-yearly video updates, CEO Bob Mumgaard details the importance of choosing a site in Chesterfield County, Virginia, for our first fusion power plant, ARC. Putting watts on the grid in the early 2030s is a big step in our long-term plan to bring our clean, zero-carbon fusion energy to the world. Here’s the look from inside CFS at what else has happened in the past six months. We have: • Completed the manufacture of more than half of the toroidal field (TF) magnet “pancakes” we need for our first tokamak, SPARC • Begun stacking poloidal field (PF) pancakes into our first PF magnet, a pulsed-power design • Finished manufacturing and testing our Central Solenoid Model Coil (CSMC) magnet, proving out our pulsed magnet technology We’ve hit our peak manufacturing velocity at our Magnet Factory here in Devens, Massachusetts. And two key tokamak components, the cryostat base and vacuum vessel, are due soon at our headquarters that we moved into two years ago. This video offers some first looks at that hardware. The next step is assembling the SPARC tokamak, our first fusion machine. Two orange stands in Tokamak Hall await the first TF magnets, and supporting subsystems for heating, power, and cooling are rapidly arriving in the building around Tokamak Hall. We’re also sharing some first or early looks at new hardware, including of our magnet-testing cryostats and one of our welding robots in action. 2024 was a big year for CFS. Stay tuned as SPARC’s fusion hardware comes together in 2025. -

In an enormous development for Commonwealth Fusion Systems and for the commercialization of fusion energy, CFS has committed to build the world's first grid-scale fusion power plant, ARC, in Virginia. We evaluated more than 100 sites around the world before settling on this location, a good site with good infrastructure and a strong appetite for the firm supply of power we'll provide. We'll independently finance, build, own, and operate this first-of-its-kind technology so we can start generating clean, carbon-free energy in the early 2030's. We'll also collaborate with Dominion Energy Virginia to help smooth ARC's path to the grid, benefitting from their development and technical expertise while helping the utility learn about fusion. ARC will produce about 400 megawatts of electricity — enough to power 150,000 homes in the area or some of the largest commercial and industrial sites. ARC, a fusion energy device called a tokamak, will supply 400 megawatts of continuous fusion power to the customers in the state beginning in the early 2030s. We're grateful for the warm reception ARC has received so far by the state of Virginia, and look forward to engaging with the community as we deliver on our promise. The decision was driven by a number of factors — including the world-class talent ecosystem, the proximity to our collaborators at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an environment where we could see a path to success. With a new law, the Mass Leads Act, that business environment gets even better for new and existing companies.
