Introduced by Congress in 1998, the Denali Commission is an independent federal agency designed to provide critical utilities, infrastructure, and economic support throughout Alaska. With the creation of the Denali Commission, Congress acknowledged the need for increased inter-agency cooperation and focus on Alaska’s remote communities. The Denali Commission Strategic Plan FY2018-2022 outlines the Commissioners’ vision for agency investments over the next five years.

  Today was the final day of the Anchorage Security and Defense Conference with ADAC-ARCTIC. Our Principal Investigator Jeff Libby led the first panel of the morning, focused on resilience and defense. He later returned to the stage to provide final remarks alongside Randy "Church" Kee and our event co-hosts at the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies. Distinguished guests on the resiliency panel this morning included BG Timothy Brower, Vice Director for Strategy, Policy, Plans, and International Affairs at the National Guard Bureau; Ms. Julie Kitka, Federal Co-Chair at the Denali Commission; Patrol Agent in Charge Ross Wilkin with the U.S. Border Patrol; Ms. Maria Jontén, Project Director at the Strategic Implications and Innovations Center, Swedish Defence University; Mr. Shannon Jenkins, Senior Arctic Policy Advisor for the U.S. Coast Guard; and Sergeant Jackie Jacobson, Patrol Commander with the Canadian Rangers. The final day of the conference also included panels on critical infrastructure, strategic horizons, and next steps, with remarks from senators to ambassadors to rear admirals We want to thank the nearly 400 guests who joined us from across the Arctic and around the world for this week of important conversations on the allied North, and we look forward to seeing you all again at next year's event.

  The final day of the Anchorage Security and Defense Conference began with a strong start, as Mayor Suzanne LaFrance and Colonel Matt Komatsu of the Alaska National Guard delivered opening remarks that set a collaborative and forward-thinking tone. The morning sessions offered dynamic discussions addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our time. In the first session, moderated by Jeffrey Libby of ADAC-ARCTIC at the University of Alaska Anchorage, panelists explored how communities and organizations across the North are fostering resilience through whole-of-society approaches. This discussion emphasized the importance of cohesive networks and durable communities in navigating geopolitical, environmental, and technological challenges, with experts like Brigadier General Timothy Brower and Ms. Julie Kitka, Co-Chair of the Denali Commission, sharing actionable insights. Next, the focus shifted to critical infrastructure security, moderated by Dr. John Garver, Director of the Homeland Defense Institute (HDI) Defense Institute, where leaders discussed innovative strategies for protecting essential systems. Their perspectives highlighted the necessity of international cooperation and adaptive strategies to ensure resilience in an increasingly interconnected world. Attendees also had the opportunity to see a special video message from U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan. The afternoon promises to cap this inaugural event with bold ideas, impactful dialogue, and actionable strategies for the decade ahead. • 🎉 Yesterday was Alaska-focused at the DOE-OIE’s Annual Program Review in Denver this week! Energy & Bulk Fuel Program Manager, Katie Conway, participated in impactful discussions, knowledge-sharing, and brainstorming sessions. The Denali Commission, in valued partnership with the Office of Indian Energy, continues to play a crucial role in supporting Alaska’s tribal power infrastructure. We are proud to have invested in many of the presented projects, from design work to match/gap funding, as well as complementary efforts preparing powerhouses for renewable integration. Exciting progress and partnerships ahead!

  We’re back for the second day of the Anchorage Security and Defense Conference, which we’re co-hosting with the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies. Nearly 400 guests are here in Anchorage to discuss partnerships, strategies, concerns, and solutions in the ever-shifting Arctic.Jereme Altendorf, CHMM, PMP represented ADAC-ARCTIC as a moderator for the education panel. Altendorf, our Associate Director of Arctic Programs and Strategy Implementation Office of Research, led the conversation on the critical intersection of higher education and Arctic security. We were honored to host subject matter experts on the panel including: Dr. Chelsea Thompson, Ph.D., Program Manager for Arctic and Resilience at the DHS Science and Technology Directorate, Office of University Programs; Dr. Kaja Brix, Artic Program Director at NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration; Dr. Larry Hinzman, President’s Arctic Professor at University of Alaska Fairbanks; Dr. Merritt Turetsky, Director of Arctic Security at University of Colorado Boulder; and Jocelyn Fenton, Director of Programs at Denali Commission. Discussions throughout the day focused on international partnerships and Arctic exchange. Other panels included a discussion on political adversaries in the North with researchers from the George C. Marshall Center in Germany; a discussion on the new face of NATO with representatives from Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and the U.S.; and a session on Indo-Pacific partnerships joined by speakers from the Daniel K. Inouye Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies in Hawaii, La Trobe University and Lowy Institute in Australia; and the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo. We look forward to another day of powerful discussions and collaborations tomorrow on Day 3.
  
• It was great to attend and see the Resource Development Council for Alaska, Inc.‘s Annual Conference bringing together industry leaders to discuss Alaska’s future. Staying informed on industry activities is key to identifying opportunities were private investment can complement and enhance public infrastructure efforts. These partnerships can drive sustainable development, support, local economies, and build stronger communities.   We had some amazing panels for our first day of our Alaska Resources Conference! Panelists presented updates on Alaska’s workforce development equation, uniting our fishing industry, production in our mining industry, carbon capture utilization and storage technologies, bright spots in our oil and gas industry, accessibility of our haul road, and coming together to solve Southcentral energy supply issues.
