About us
Founded in 2015, Discord is a voice, video and text app that helps friends and communities come together to hang out and explore their interests - from artists and activists, to study groups, sneakerheads, plant parents, and more. With 200 million monthly users across 19 million active communities, called servers, Discord has grown to become one of the most popular communications services in the world. Discord was built without selling ads or user data and instead, offers a premium subscription called Nitro that gives users special perks like higher quality streams and fun customizations. And we're hiring! If this strikes a chord with you, come build belonging with us: https://discordapp.com/jobs for openings.

- We’re onsite at Tokyo Game Show this week and it’s been a blast! Our Co-Founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy took the stage to explore the future of multiplayer gaming on Discord alongside Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Ken Inagaki and EA’s Shaun Noguchi (Cunneen). Meanwhile, our SVP of Global Partnerships Kelly Liang was joined by Liquid Advertising’s Nikki DePaola and IGN Japan’s Daniel Robson to share more about Quests and ways to maximize your game's potential on Discord and beyond. If you’re at TGS this weekend, swing by our booth, where you can explore Discordopolis, get your hands on exclusive new merch, and even put your gaming skills to the test against Wumpus in Street Fighter 6. Fair warning… they’ve gotten good. Like, really good. https://lnkd.in/guh9rsCQ

As Discord continues to be a place that helps people deepen friendships around #games and shared interests, we are keenly aware that #privacy is key. We are committed to protecting the privacy and data of the roughly 200 million people who use our platform every month and take our responsibility seriously. Our recent roll out of end-to-end encryption protocol for voice and video calls (aka DAVE) ensures that only you and the people you're talking to can access your call. We wanted to do this right so #transparency has been a critical part of our intention and rollout. From publishing our protocol whitepaper and open-source library to commissioning an in-depth audit from Trail of Bits and expanding our bug bounty program, we’ve strived to do this in a way that’s clear for everyone. Much appreciation for our teams who have been focused on bringing this effort to life. New blog post: Why Discord Activities can do what TikTok, Snap, FB, and others couldn't - bring social gaming back 🕹️https://lnkd.in/gMES3fYiHere's how: 1. Discord is comprised of a huge (200M+ MAU) group of engaged gamers. It's big and densely populated with users who care about games. 2. Developers have access to legit social/growth channels to get the large network of players to find, play with, and build relationships with each other. True social must include the ability to play with friends and find new ones. Discord offers both. 3. Activities is a web-based application platform. That means developers can build and iterate quickly, and games will be available cross-platform across desktop and mobile from the start. **PSA: We've already brought a few companies building for Discord Activities into @speedrun and applications are open for the upcoming Jan cohort taking place in SF (application link in the comments) 1. Discord is >200M MAU and is built by gamers, for gamers. That means they have the leadership DNA to make good decisions for developers + the right expectations from the userbase. This is in contrast to other application platforms from FB, TikTok, Snap, etc. where gaming conflicted with core social media features/flows and made games easy to deprioritize. 2. The key to bringing social games back is to have strong social channels made available to developers. Discord Activities come with access to native social channels and constructs. Developers should lean into these channels as much as possible for viral growth + social retention, especially early in the platform's lifecycle when the platform is the most open. Early distribution leads often compound. 3. Devs on Discord will also have a few tech advantages: Activities is web-based, enabling rapid building/iteration. Discord has already seen some large-scale game launches (Playroom's Death By AI reached millions of players in a week!), but a developer's ability to live operate a game is just as exciting. Being web-based also means that Activities are cross-platform from the start which is a big win for distribution. 4. Discord is investing big into the platform and the team have been great partners to the companies we work with that are building Activities. Developers can get real-time support + give feedback through Discord's Developer Server. Despite being early (monetization on the platform is still a WIP), Discord has demonstrated a willingness and ability to support a developer ecosystem. In conclusion, we're excited about Discord's Activities platform and have heard they're expanding access for developers soon. Be on the lookout for more info And if you're interested in building for Activities, let us know what you've learned, and make sure you apply to SPEEDRUN! - We are kicking off our celebration of Hispanic & Latiné Heritage month at Discord. This month, we are taking some time to highlight members of La Cafeteria, Discord’s Hispanic & Latiné Employee Resource Group (ERG). These employees will share some words of wisdom and highlight the importance of community and how they work to authentically celebrate their identities in the workplace. First up is Kat Haro, Admin Business Partner at Discord and leader of La Cafetería–our Latiné Employee Resource Group (ERG)! Her wisdom? “Embrace the unknown and be adaptable.” As La Cafetería’s leader, she’s built a strong community with the support of colleagues who share the same vision to elevate the Latiné community through authentic connection and support. ✊ Interested in creating a space where Hispanic and Latiné folks can thrive?
