40 Under 40 Alumni Spotlight: Ariel Marshall, Ph.D.🎉 We proudly celebrate Ariel Marshall, Ph.D. as a 2024 Georgia Tech Alumni 40 Under 40. 🎉 After earning her Ph.D. in chemistry from Georgia Tech, Ariel took her talents to Capitol Hill, where she is now Chief of Staff to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Under Secretary for Science and Innovation. She also served as Senator Jeanne Shaheen's legislative director, leading efforts to secure historic investments in energy, water, and broadband infrastructure. Through her incredible work in public service, Ariel has shaped policies that drive progress in energy, science, and innovation. We asked this impressive alumna 2️⃣ questions: 1. What advice do you have for current undergraduates? “I encourage all students and new graduates to embrace the unknown. Despite our most careful planning, life is often unpredictable. While this might seem daunting, it is an opportunity to continue learning, growing, and evolving. Opening yourself up to new experiences is the best path to career growth, an expanded skill set, and a mindset that can tackle any challenge life throws your way.” 2. Georgia Tech’s mission is to develop leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition. Can you tell us a little bit about how you are making a difference in the world today? “Over the past ten years, I have pursued a career of public service. I lead day-to-day management and oversight for a $15 billion portfolio of activities across the DOE’s Office of Science, Applied Energy Programs, and 13 National Laboratories, the premier engines of scientific discovery and clean energy innovation. My portfolio includes the DOE teams leading the Energy Earthshots Initiative and Science & Energy Crosscuts, and the UnderSecretary's senior advisors coordinating DOE activities in fusion, critical minerals and materials, carbon removal, artificial intelligence, critical and emerging technologies, and research security.”Georgia Tech Alumni Association Georgia Tech Women Alumnae Network (GTWAN) Georgia Institute of Technology Georgia Tech School of Chemistry and Biochemistry #GeorgiaTech #GTSciences #WeCanDoThat #AlumniSpotlight #40Under40 #PublicService #Innovation - 🎉 Join us for the College of Sciences Homecoming Tailgate! 🎉 Alumni, students, faculty, and staff—come celebrate with us on November 9th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tech Green! - Congratulations to Hannah Liu (Hatchell), MSc for being named to the 40 under 40 2024 alumni class by the Georgia Tech Alumni Association. A graduate of Georgia Tech’s master’s program in Bioinformatics, Liu works as a senior manager in analytics for Natera. She is passionate about supporting the accessibility and affordability of genetic information to improve health outcomes. We asked this accomplished alumna 2️⃣ questions: 1. How did Georgia Tech prepare you for success? "Throughout my Bioinformatics Master’s program, I was exposed to engaged faculty, motivated peers, and challenging coursework that not only sparked my curiosity about roles and industries I had never considered, but also equipped me with the skills to pursue career paths previously inaccessible. With many resources at my disposal such as Georgia Tech’s career fairs, mentorship programs, the career center, and guidance from program faculty, I was able to secure my first job in the clinical genetic testing industry just before graduating in 2017. Since then, I’ve enjoyed frequent interactions with my master's program and its community by conducting informational interviews with current students, offering career advice on an alumni panel, and staying connected with the incredible faculty." 2. 🐝 Georgia Tech’s mission is to develop leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition. Can you tell us how you are making a difference in the world today? "The clinical genetic testing industry is exciting to me personally because it seeks to leverage advanced technologies for studying the human genome to produce actionable insights that individuals can use to improve their healthcare outcomes. At Natera, I frequently hear stories from patients who feel reassured by our clinical-grade diagnostic tests, whether confirming their cancer remains in remission or that their fetus is free of genetic abnormalities. I currently manage a team that provides access to the clinical data needed for product development, research, and publications, all for the benefit of empowering patients with the information they need to make informed healthcare decisions for themselves and their families."Georgia Institute of Technology Georgia Tech Women Alumnae Network (GTWAN)
