- Let’s celebrate artist Carrie Mae Weems and philanthropists Jack and Susy Wadsworth, truly visionary voices in art and culture honored at last night’s event “Under the Oculus.” All have been instrumental in advancing the Guggenheim’s role in exploring and redrawing the frontiers of modern and contemporary art. Ten years after her landmark 2014 retrospective at the Guggenheim, Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video, Weems continues to upend expectations and transform our understanding of social identity. Through their philanthropic support of research and exhibition projects in the United States and abroad, the Wadsworths have contributed immeasurably to the field of contemporary Asian art.

- “If I had been born one or two hundred years ago, I might have been a sculptor, but photography is a very quick way to see, to make sculpture.”—Robert Mapplethorpe, born on this day in 1946. __ 📷: Robert Mapplethorpe, “Ken and Tyler,” 1985 © Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation.
- Max Ernst’s "Attirement of the Bride" is a surreal, spooky masterpiece perfect for Halloween. 👹 The painting features strange figures, haunting animal forms, and a mysterious bird-man, setting the scene for a spooky, dreamlike narrative. Ernst used traditional painting techniques to bring an unusual subject to life. He was inspired by 19th-century Symbolist art and 16th-century German artists like Lucas Cranach the Elder, blending elegance with darker, more primal elements. - Antonio Saura was inspired by Spanish masters like Diego Velázquez and Francisco de Goya but wanted to break free from traditional styles in the repressive 1950s. By combining expressive painting with classic themes, he gave new life to Spanish art. In "24 Heads," part of his "Crowds" series, interlocked, bodiless faces fill the canvas, creating a striking visual effect. The earthy tones and bursts of white lines bring energy to the work, while the added collage elements give it a unique texture, exploring themes of identity and connection. This work is in the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao collection. Learn more: https://gu.gg/3BwsOf9Pictured: Antonio Saura, "24 heads," 1957.
