About us
A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, the International Republican Institute (IRI) advances freedom and democracy worldwide by developing political parties, civic institutions, open elections, good governance and the rule of law. President Ronald Reagan’s call to “begin a major effort to secure the best - a crusade for freedom that will engage the faith and fortitude of the next generation” started a new chapter in the advancement of democracy and freedom around the world. Since 1983 IRI, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, has worked to advance freedom and democracy worldwide by providing assistance to nations at various stages of political development: from those struggling to free themselves, to those in transition and to established democracies. Throughout the world, IRI has worked to promote democracy by supporting open and transparent elections, strengthening electoral processes and political parties, increasing government transparency and accountability, and ensuring the right of all people to be represented fairly and justly by their governments.

- IRI's newest poll by our Center for Insights in Survey Research (CISR) shows Mongolians have concerns over the economy and negative views on media freedom in the country but highlights strong support for democratic governance. The survey also found that 68% of Mongolians believe that democracy is the best form of government. “Our research shows that people do not believe the media is free in Mongolia,” said IRI's Regional Director for East Asia and the Pacific Adam King. “More independence will encourage trust in a free press, which is an important institution in any democratic system. Despite the current concern over the media environment, it is reassuring that over two-thirds of Mongolians believe that democracy is the best form of government.” Read the full poll here: https://lnkd.in/eJaueXSy
- A newly-released public opinion poll of Albania by IRI's Center for Insights in Survey Research (CISR) reveals strong support for fighting corruption, a desire for democratic governance, and concerns over the economy. “With parliamentary elections coming up on May 11th, it is a positive sign that an overwhelming majority of Albanians want to see the fight against corruption continue,” said Paul McCarthy, Director of Europe for IRI. “Anti-corruption efforts will enhance transparency and accountability among elected officials and bolster the already strong belief that democracy is the best form of government.” Read the full poll here: https://lnkd.in/e6WXhJMT

Today, IRI has released a statement on the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. “The International Republican Institute mourns the loss of former President Jimmy Carter. As a Lieutenant in the Navy, State Senator, Governor of Georgia, and President of the United States, Jimmy Carter lived a life of public service dedicated to the well-being of his fellow citizens. In his post-White House years, he continued to serve others through his work with Habitat for Humanity and by championing free and fair elections abroad with the Carter Center. He will be remembered for his contributions to the landmark peace deal between Israel and Egypt, and for his promotion of human rights around the world. “Our thoughts are with the Carter family and their loved ones at this time.” - The October 26 parliamentary elections in Georgia presented an opportunity for citizens to elect representatives who share their vision for Georgia’s future. However, IRI's Electoral Observation Mission found that a legal framework and regulatory practices that hindered genuine electoral competition, misuse of public resources by the ruling government, the targeting of civil society; obstruction of opposition parties, systematic voter intimidation, and lack of public confidence and trust in institutions contributed to an election that was fundamentally flawed. IRI International Election Observation Mission to Georgia iri.org - On the latest episode of By The People, we tackle the recent election in Moldova. On October 20th, Moldovans went to the polls to vote for president and on a referendum on EU membership. The International Republican Institute's (IRI) election observation mission was on the ground to observe the proceedings, and found significant foreign interference, including vote-buying, propaganda, and cyberattacks. One of the leaders of IRI’s election observation mission in Moldova, former Congressman Peter Roskam, joins us to unpack the implications of the elections for Moldovan democracy and the wider region.
