About us

Local Projects is an exhibition and media design firm for museums and public spaces. While innovation drives much of today’s design, we’re interested in creating projects that endure. We’re reinventing public space through media. We focus on engaging audiences through emotion and technology, developing new ways for people to interact with art, cities and one another. We gather stories through collaborative storytelling projects, and between Storycorps, the 9/11 Memorial Museum and Change By Us, we have brought forth over 100,000 individuals’ stories and memories, sharing them with the world and touching millions of lives. Local Projects has won top prize for every major design award including the National Design Award for Interaction Design, Fast Company Masters of Design, Webby Gold, Muse Gold and AIGA Gold.

Today our studio turns twenty. We've come a long way since our humble beginnings inside a walk-in closet. We're grateful for the opportunities to create enduring and beloved experiences around the world. We're mindful of our responsibility to share untold and overlooked stories. The Do Good Institute Campus is officially open! On October 10, our CEO Whitney Rutter and Creative Director Nathan Adkisson were in attendance to officially welcome the new Rings exhibit outside of Thurgood Marshall Hall with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, culminating years of work with the Do Good Institute at the University of Maryland. This first-of-its-kind live art display and sound bath shares impactful quotes from UMD grads who are making a real difference in the world as they walk through illuminated rings toward our bold, three-dimensional “Do Good" sign. We hope these outdoor installations inspire and delight visitors to campus, from prospective students to alumni. Ms. Opal Lee, grandmother of Juneteenth, celebrated her 98th birthday on Thursday, and we were happy to unveil her gift: new renderings of the exhibits for the National Juneteenth Museum! Scheduled to open in 2026, the 50,000-square-foot museum located in Fort Worth’s Historic Southside neighborhood will celebrate the legacy of Juneteenth, the holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. “We specifically selected Local Projects for their unparalleled expertise in creating immersive and impactful exhibits. Their record of excellence aligns perfectly with our vision to honor Juneteenth in a way that educates and inspires,” said Jarred Howard, CEO of the Museum. We hope the Museum fosters a powerful connection between visitors and the story and impact of Juneteenth! Our hearts and minds are full after attending #AAAM2024! The ASSOCIATION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUMS' 46th Annual Conference marked the 60 year anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, and hosted a record 800 attendees. We convened to imagine a brighter future for Black historic and cultural sites and their potential for impact. Whether hearing our own L'Rai Arthur-Mensah speak on behalf of the Local Projects' team helping to design the National Juneteenth Museum (alongside CEO Jarred Howard and Dr. Lauren Cross, Ph.D) or dancing the night away to Raheem DeVaughn or Sweet Honey In The Rock, we spent every moment grateful to Dr. Vedet Coleman-Robinson, Ph.D. and her team for the opportunity to take part in this warm and generative community of professionals. Thank you for every joyful moment #AAAM. We'll see you in #Charleston next year!

Construction is underway on a brand new public art installation coming to Do Good Plaza. This interactive audio exhibit is a first of its kind, with five sensor activated Rings that will connect visitors with voices from UMD’s campus.
