About us

Local Projects is an exhibition and media design firm for museums and public spaces. While innovation drives much of today’s design, we’re interested in creating projects that endure. We’re reinventing public space through media. We focus on engaging audiences through emotion and technology, developing new ways for people to interact with art, cities and one another. We gather stories through collaborative storytelling projects, and between Storycorps, the 9/11 Memorial Museum and Change By Us, we have brought forth over 100,000 individuals’ stories and memories, sharing them with the world and touching millions of lives. Local Projects has won top prize for every major design award including the National Design Award for Interaction Design, Fast Company Masters of Design, Webby Gold, Muse Gold and AIGA Gold.

Our hearts and minds are full after attending #AAAM2024! The ASSOCIATION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUMS' 46th Annual Conference marked the 60 year anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, and hosted a record 800 attendees. We convened to imagine a brighter future for Black historic and cultural sites and their potential for impact. Whether hearing our own L'Rai Arthur-Mensah speak on behalf of the Local Projects' team helping to design the National Juneteenth Museum (alongside CEO Jarred Howard and Dr. Lauren Cross, Ph.D) or dancing the night away to Raheem DeVaughn or Sweet Honey In The Rock, we spent every moment grateful to Dr. Vedet Coleman-Robinson, Ph.D. and her team for the opportunity to take part in this warm and generative community of professionals. Thank you for every joyful moment #AAAM. We'll see you in #Charleston next year!

Excited to see this last piece of the new Do Good Institute Plaza clicking into place! Our indoor and outdoor experiences for the University of Maryland will inspire Terps everywhere to Do Good. We'll see you in October for the grand opening!

Construction is underway on a brand new public art installation coming to Do Good Plaza. This interactive audio exhibit is a first of its kind, with five sensor activated Rings that will connect visitors with voices from UMD’s campus. Le Visionnaire is this year's winner for Workplace Design at Fast Company's Innovation by Design awards! Grace Snelling's writeup includes a great quote from our client Cristina PARMA capturing the spirit of personalization and savoir-faire in the space: "According to Cristina Parma, the project director on L'Oréal’s side, cosmetics marketing today is about personalization, and she needed a partner whose vision would reflect that. 'The space] has to follow the personal identity of each visitor—it cannot impose a visiting experience,' Parma says. 'That’s why I was interested in the specific expertise of Local Projects, because they respect the fact that every human being can have a different interaction with the space.' ”

L'Oréal's Le Visionnaire was an opportunity to combine learnings from both worlds, with a rich exploration of the company's heritage, a flexible and immersive presentation space to showcase the breadth of L'Oréal's current offerings, and a glimpse into its future with the machine-learning enhanced product inspiration space on the top floor. While we've won a few times in the experiential category, this is our first time winning for a workplace, and we're over the moon about having our workplace design in the spotlight. Thanks to our clients at L'Oréal and our architectural partners Moatti-Rivière. We'll see you at the #innovationfestival #fastcompany #loreal #levisionnaire #workplace #design #innovation
