We are delighted that Jamaica Hospital (JHMC) will receive a statewide transformation grant to establish the MediSys Health Network Comprehensive Cancer Program of Queens. This effort will make high quality cancer care more readily available in Queens, including through a new radiation and infusion therapy campus at JHMC, as well as referral of patients to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for advanced therapy or clinical trials.
Today, New York Governor Kathy Hochul surprised our team with an exciting announcement: she is awarding over $180 million to build our new MediSys Health Network Cancer Center at Jamaica Hospital! This funding, part of the Governor’s Safety Net Transformation Program, enables us to build the world-class cancer center that our community deserves. We would like to express our gratitude to Governor Hochul for her support, as well as to our local elected officials, including Congressman Gregory Meeks and Queens Borough President Donovan Richards. Whole genome sequencing, a process which is used widely to improve treatments of difficult-to-diagnose diseases as well as for genetic screening of newborns, has given hope to patients with certain rare cancers. In a feature for Newsweek, scientists and doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) reveal how genes are mapping cures for cancer. "For many cancer types, outcomes have completely changed," says Dr. Elli Papaemmanuil, a computational oncologist at MSK. Head and Neck Cancer experts from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), including Dr. Jatin Shah, Dr. Nancy Lee, and Dr. Alan Ho, will be speaking at multiple sessions at the International Federation of Head and Neck Oncologic Societies (IFHNOS) 2025 Head and Neck Cancer Summit in Dubai. Discussion topics include the future of head and neck cancer and the latest techniques and best practices in using surgery, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy to treat head and neck cancers.
New research from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) is uncovering why new precision oncology treatments benefit patients of some ancestries more than others, underscoring the need for more inclusive approaches in precision oncology. A study led by MSK computational biologist Kanika Arora and MSK molecular geneticist Dr. Debyani Chakravarty shows that patients of European ancestry are more likely to find a match to the latest treatments than patients of other ancestries. “These findings highlight a trend that could be exacerbating the existing disparities in cancer outcomes that impact Black Americans and other minority populations,” says Dr. Chakravarty. Understanding these kinds of genetic differences is one solution to closing the gap in cancer outcomes among people of different ancestries. "We need to learn from patients from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds, just as we have learned historically from patients of European ancestry, to guide the development of newer targeted drugs," says Dr. Chakravarty.
