From bedsides to boardrooms and beyond, women continue to shape and elevate the standards of patient care, research, and medical education. As CEO of one of the nation’s leading academic medical systems, I am fortunate to bear witness to novel advancements from our physicians that improve the practice of medicine. These innovations, large and small, consistently improve the lives of the communities we serve every day. These physicians not only heal, but lead, inspire, and transform the world around us. This story features three shining examples of inspiring women in medicine: Diane M. Simeone, MD, director, Moores Cancer Center, Crystal Wiley Cené, MD, MPH, chief administrative officer for health justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) at UC San Diego Health, and Cynthia Gyamfi-Bannerman, MD, MS, chair for the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at UC San Diego School of Medicine and perinatologist at UC San Diego Health. https://lnkd.in/grF3Nkjf - Have you ever wondered who ensures your comfort and safety during surgery? Shane Garst, a registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), is one of them. He walks us through his routine at UC San Diego Health. ☀️ CRNAs are advanced practice providers who administer anesthesia, ensuring patients remain safe and comfortable during surgeries and procedures. This week we celebrate and recognize UC San Diego Health advanced practice providers (APPs) including our nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse midwives and registered nurse anesthetists who play a vital role at UC San Diego Health, working collectively to elevate patient care. Please join us in celebrating our APP’s, we are grateful for all you do #APPweek #UCSD #UCSDHealth #UCSanDiego #NurseAnesthetist
- Wendy Nguyen’s illness started out with typical cold symptoms – a cough, shortness of breath and painful, weak muscles. When her symptoms could not be treated by over-the-counter remedies and progressed with swollen rashes all over her body, she sought out medical treatment. A biopsy on her hand showed Nguyen had a very rare autoimmune disease that had affected her lungs. She was diagnosed with interstitial lung disease with hypoxia from dermatomyositis which left her weak and struggling for every breath. When she learned she had to receive a double lung #transplant, Nguyen requested to be transferred to UC San Diego Health. “The diagnosis was devastating for me and my family,” said Nguyen. “Everything happened so quickly. I was emotionally and psychologically trying to comprehend it all, not knowing this was life-threatening illness and not knowing the challenges ahead, or how to prepare for the unknown. I was very scared.” After the successful transplant surgery by Eugene Golts, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon, Nguyen felt fragile, delicate and easily broken. But as soon as she began to heal, both physically and mentally – she knew she was well taken care of and that was her motivation to fight. Nguyen is now celebrating her one-year transplant anniversary, which she states was the most profound experience in her life. “The care and attentiveness of all the doctors, nurses and staff was beyond excellent. Not only that but the expertise, technology, knowledge and quick actions saved my life. I am forever grateful to the team and my donor.” With the special care of UC San Diego Health doctors – Kamyar Afshar, DO, Gordon Yung, MD, Aarya Kafi, MD, pulmonologists, and Dr. Golts along side a comprehensive care team, Nguyen is slowly resuming normalcy in her life which includes volunteering, being outside, yoga and teaching English. Her husband, children, grandchild and friends are cheering her on every step of the way. “I have been given a second chance at life, a second breath… so I intend to make the most of it.” Follow Center for Transplantation at UC San Diego Health for updates on leading-edge, compassionate transplant care from our multidisciplinary transplant team.#TransplantAnniversary #UCSD

✨ Milestone Achievement! 🎉 The UCSD Interventional Pulmonology team is proud to announce that we’ve surpassed 1,000 robotic bronchoscopy procedures using the Ion robotic system—all in less than three years since starting on August 13, 2021. By allowing us to identify and diagnose lung disease more accurately and at an earlier stage, we are making a critical impact on patient outcomes and survival rates. Early and precise diagnosis means we can shift the course of treatment, giving our patients a better chance at recovery and improved quality of life. This achievement is made possible through the unwavering support of our administration, physician leaders, and the commitment of our outstanding IP team.
