Psychiatric and substance use disorders devastate the emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being of all concerned. These diseases are progressive and potentially fatal when left untreated. We recently welcomed several peer support team members from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office for a site tour and a Meet and Greet with our team. The Manatee County Sheriff's Department takes the mental health of its members seriously and has implemented a peer-support team, welcomed a four-legged deputy to its department for service and emotional support, and is being proactive in learning about local resources if the need arises for inpatient and outpatient mental health needs. We had a wonderful conversation learning about their needs and pain points, successes, and areas of growth they are hoping to achieve. They toured our Uniformed Personnel Program and provided us with valuable insight and feedback throughout the tour. Thank you for all you and your department members do to keep the community safe. Reminder: the NAMI Adult Connection Recovery Support Group is this Monday, November 4! This is a no-cost, peer-led, in-person support group for any adult who has experienced symptoms of a mental health condition. You will gain insight from hearing the challenges and successes of others in a safe and confidential environment. The groups are led by NAMI-trained facilitators who have lived experience and are now living in recovery. The group is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., on-site at Windmoor Healthcare. Fear of relapse doesn't have to be a part of Halloween this year. Protect your sobriety with a few simple preplanning activities like attending support meetings, reminding yourself of your triggers, reminding yourself of your coping skills, having distraction activities available, planning to attend family-friendly events, or controlling the plot by hosting a family-friendly sober Halloween party yourself. You can do this!
