Before I get to the oath, I want you to appreciate your extraordinary position as a manager.

I believe a manager’s role is an awe inspiring one! You’re responsible for the living, breathing people on your team. Your duty is to inspire and lead. Ultimately, you’re accountable for their happiness at work.

Fail in this role and employees leave. HR studies indicate that most employees quit their managers, not their companies. To your employees, you’re the company (no pressure) so you and your company can’t afford to lose valuable talent.

Employees you lead want you to be someone they can respect because you “get it” about your leadership role. The result? They’re empowered, feeling appreciated and they stay—as fully engaged team members!

To make this happen, I think ALL managers should take this oath:

I [name] understand the roles, responsibilities and awe inspiring-ness of being a manager of people. To be the one whom they respect, who listens, who has their back. I’ll strive to be a better leader than manager. I’ll never take the gravity of my role as a manager for granted

Next up: You’re a manager but you hate people! Now what?
