Learn more and register: https://lnkd.in/g7fZ2hjP #AECOM #Tunneling #CuttingEdgeConference #Engineering - In our second blog post WEFTEC 2024, #AECOM's Lucy Pugh reflects on two panel discussions she moderated with industry leaders on the topic of PFAS management, removal and destruction. “As someone who works closely with industries grappling with these issues, I have a deep appreciation for the work being done to address PFAS contamination. Companies that have produced or used PFAS didn’t create this problem with malice; they are now facing significant costs to resolve a problem that impacts us all. But they are rising to the challenge. By adapting to evolving regulations, investing in technologies, and working with experts to find effective solutions, industries are playing a crucial role in reducing PFAS from the environment,” she comments in the blog.
While at WEFTEC 2024, our Global Industrial Water Practice Director, Lucy Pugh, P.E., BCEE, joined industry leaders in responding to one of today’s most pressing environmental challenges — PFAS contamination. Moderating two panels, she and other experts discussed existing obstacles and the solutions under development that are getting closer to tackling this complex issue. - With U.S. Department of Energy funding, we’re advancing nutrient removal technology in wastewater treatment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, helping the U.S. move closer to a net-zero future. Four partner utilities — DC Water, Hampton Roads Sanitation District, Prince William County Service Authority and Linda County Water District — are collaborating with us and will serve as demonstration sites. Our team is strengthened by the expertise of academic partners from Cornell University, Princeton University, Northwestern University, and the University of Nevada, Reno. Together, we’re advancing scalable solutions for a cleaner, resilient future. Water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) are significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions, primarily methane and nitrous oxide, which have much higher warming potential than CO₂. Addressing emissions from these plants contributes substantially to climate goals and the transition to a low-carbon economy. Many WRRFs were originally designed before the pressing impacts of climate change were fully understood. Today, they present significant opportunities for modernization through innovative funding that supports advanced digestion processes and renewable energy integration. Such funding is critical to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, making these facilities pivotal to our decarbonization goals. Together with our research partners, we aim to simplify treatment processes by developing the partial denitrification anammox (PdNA) process in different treatment configurations, which should involve fewer process steps than conventional technologies. Through our project titled ‘Technological Upscaling of the Partial Denitrification-Anammox Process for Decarbonization with Mainstream Deammonification’, we will test five different ways of growing helpful bacteria on special materials, along with five different added nutrients, to make nitrogen removal easier and cheaper. It will make this new method, called PdNA, ready for regular use without needing extra energy or adding carbon pollution. By doing this, it could replace older ways of removing nitrogen, which produce greenhouse gases and other harmful emissions. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dQzXJk4p

- At this year's #WEFTEC, #AECOM's Anna Cleaver moderated an important panel discussion on a critical, emerging focus in wastewater treatment: N2O emissions. Read more from her on how the wastewater industry is tackling this potent greenhouse gas.
At #WEFTEC 2024, our wastewater market sector lead, Canada, Anna Cleaver and other industry leaders discussed a critical, emerging focus in wastewater treatment: N2O emissions. A potent greenhouse gas, N2O, or nitrous oxide, has a global warming potential nearly 300 times greater than carbon dioxide — and is a common byproduct of wastewater treatment. As the discussions at WEFTEC unfolded, it became clear that N2O emissions, though still an emerging climate challenge, require urgent action. Explore Anna’s reflections on the conference and how the industry is responding to the crisis of N2O emissions: https://lnkd.in/e7rf_Ei9 #AECOM #Water #ClimateChange
