Just Another Day On The Fire Line

May. 12th, 2014 | 12:09 pm

I have a Nephew who is a Fire Fighter. We don't realize the danger they face, on a regular routine. Yes, we realize that Military and Law Enforcement live within that, daily... but do we think about some of the other jobs?

Here is a bit from his recent email:

We had an arsonist in town who started at least 13 fires and I was on 9 of them. He has since been arrested, but we are still getting a bunch of fires that are not arson. I have had a house fire almost every shift for the last couple months. Every once in a while we will have enough guys on duty that I get to ride "backwards" instead of drive the engine, which means that I get to fight the fire and not operate the engine.

Back in March we responded to a house fire and it was a night that we had a 4 man engine and I was riding backwards. 1 driver, 1 Captain, and 2 Firefighters. On the way my buddy and I were talking about who would pull the hose and who would grab the "irons" (axe and haligan) depending on who's side the fire was on. As we pulled up the fire was on my side so I would get the hose, but my buddy saw a woman on the front steps by the door and said we have a rescue.

Heavy fire and smoke was coming from the front of the house so I jumped out quickly and went up to her to get her away. As I got to her she said that her husband was still in the house. I opened the door and could barely see him through the smoke laying in the living room. I didn't think I had time to put my mask on so I took a deep breath and rushed in, grabbed him and dragged him outside where my Captain came up to help me get him down the steps and into the yard.

Another crew took him from there and provided basic life support until the ambulance got there and my crew went into the house and put the fire out. It was an amazing night and I can't explain the feelings I felt. I wasn't sure he was going to make it. Good news, he is alive and doing well today.

Helping people is why I am a Fireman and I thank God for the strengths that he gives me.

He talks as if it is an everyday-occurrence; just no big deal, etc. We should all be very grateful that individuals like this young man, are willing to put themselves in danger, to keep us safe! :)

An Excellent OTR (Old Time Radio) Story

May. 6th, 2014 | 09:54 pm

If you have 20 minutes to spare, listen to this story:

The Man Who Made Knives

It isn't exactly a true story but there were instances where survivors were found, after many years of being held captive by Native Americans and First Nations, in the Pacific Coast area, and made their way back, or were rescued. The author here, illustrates an excellent view of the possibilities.

The audio quality isn't great, but when we consider that it may have been recorded "live", from someone's home radio, we should acquiesce.

Scripts for "Tales from the Seven Seas"-- (1974–1979) -- were written by Annette McKenzie and Jack Mullen, and broadcast on Springbok Radio, the first commercial radio station in South Africa (Cape Town).

Star Wars Part the Nth...

May. 4th, 2014 | 08:04 pm

location: Talking to Angels, on the Head of a Pin

I read several Journals today, and some of them referred to this being Star Wars Day, by saying "May the 4th be with you.", to which I respond:

The 4th may be with you, but I have the Fifth!"

Ego Tripping (there may be a reason why)

GO-TRIPPING (There may be a reason why)

I was born in the Congo I walked to the fertile crescent and built the sphinx I designed a pyramid so tough that a star that only glows every one hundred years falls into the center giving divine perfect light I am bad

I sat on the throne drinking nectar with Allah I got hot and sent an ice age to Europe to cool my thirst My oldest daughter is Nefertiti the tears from my birth pains created the Nile I am a beautiful woman

I gazed on the forest and burned out the sahara desert with a packet of goat's meat and a change of clothes I crossed it in two hours I am a gazelle so swift so swift you can't catch me

For a birthday present when he was three I gave my son Hannibal an elephant He gave me Rome for Mother's Day My strength flows ever on

My son Noah built new/ark and I stood proudly at the helm as we sailed on a soft summer day

I turned myself into myself and was Jesus men intone my loving name

All praises All Praises I am the one who would save

I sowed diamonds in my back yard My bowels deliver uranium the filing from my fingernails are semi-precious jewels On a trip north I caught a cold and blew My nose giving oil to the Arab world I am so hip even my errors are correct I sailed west to reach the east and had to round off the earth as I went The hair from my head thinned and gold was laid across three continents

I am so perfect so divine so ethereal so surreal I cannot be comprehended except by my permission

I mean...I...can fly like a bird in the sky...

TOOT. TOOT. TOOT. That's "my" horn that I'm tooting...

Apr. 28th, 2014 | 09:45 pm

A Maekuzuki from 2001, that I hadn't thought of for many years.

The first two lines were posted as the challenge, and I, writing under my Pen Name of W. V. Kahler, wrote the response. The notes following were written by Jane Reichhold, giving her interpretation of what we each, individually, may have intended. Jane Reichold is a publish author and authority, on Japanese styles of Poetry.

--------------------------------------
FIRST WIN OF 2001
pinned-back ears and wagging tail
peak over the garbage can
................................Kimi Rose

Scanning the wet streets
All senses at full alert
Hunting the next trick
..............................W. V. Kahler

Maybe a word of explanation why this link was picked as winner will clarify how linking works. As you see in the first link we have the images indicating a dog and a garbage can. W. V Kahler's link starts out ambiguous enough with the first two lines that could apply to the actions of a dog so the reader feels these lines are an elaboration of the scene. Then whap! in the very last word, Kahler changes the subject of the poem from a dog to a prostitute. By using the euphemism of "trick" for prostitute, the reader is, even in the moment of realizing that the subject has been switched, still able to make a slim connection to the dog due to our thinking of "dogs - tricks - trick dog". Beyond this and much deeper, is the social implication that such women are treated 'like dogs'. Also, I see the word "hunting" in the last line. This again associates the person with the dog. Because the first verse did not say "dog" but kept the image only by implication, Kahler continued this mood perfectly. Kahler also kept the scene the same (the alley) while skillfully moving the emphasis from a dog to a person. This link is absolutely genius. It is this shift that is so admired in renga writing and in doing the maekuzuki. Thanks for all the links! Jane Reichhold

Lilies & Cats: A Dangerous Combination

Apr. 14th, 2014 | 12:29 pm

Easter and other reasons to have Lilies in your home, from the FDA Page:

Lovely Lilies and Curious Cats: A Dangerous Combination

Printer-friendly PDF (118 KB)

Cats are curious creatures by nature. They love to play, jump, and roam around the house, but sometimes their inquisitive personalities get the best of them. As the plastic eggs filled with candy and the baskets of colorful plastic grass leave the store and enter your home, it’s important to remember that these items can be dangerous for our feline friends.

It’s also important to remember that while lilies, a common household plant, are lovely to see and smell, they are still a safety threat for our cats. The entire lily plant (leaf, pollen, and flower) is considered to be toxic for cats. If you have lilies in your home this Easter, make sure that your cat doesn’t eat any part of the plants.

Symptoms of lily toxicity in cats include lethargy (decreased activity), vomiting, and loss of appetite. These symptoms worsen as the kidney damage progresses, leading to death. Early veterinary treatment is critical. If you suspect that your cat has eaten any part of a lily or its pollen, call your veterinarian immediately.

Holidays are times to celebrate with friends and family. Your feline friends want to celebrate with you. Please do your part to “cat-proof” your home in order to keep them safe this holiday season.
