Formula:

Y2Mn4Al(Si2B7BeO24)

Specific Gravity:

4.41 (Calculated)

Crystal System:

Orthorhombic

Name:

Named for the Gorno-Badakhshan Oblast, Tajikistan, that includes the type locality. The oblast makes up 45% of the land area of the country but holds only 3% of its population.

Related to perettiite-(Y) of which it is the AlBe-analogue.

Crystal structure details:
- tetrahedra form layers || (010) comprising of four different tetrahedrally coordinated sites: Si, B(1), B(2), and T;
- the above elements constitute 4-, 5-, and 8-membered rings of the Si2B7BeO24 composition;
- 3 cation sites between the above sheets: M(1), occupied by Y(REE); M(2), occupied by Mn2+(Y,Ca,Fe2+); and M(3), occupied by Al(Sc);
- ideal composition of the M(1,2) sites is Y2Mn4;
- M(3) site is, ideally, 1 Al apfu
