Christian Eriksen has vowed to prove his enduring value to Erik ten Hag and fight for a regular starting place at Manchester United.

Eriksen scored twice in United's 7-0 mauling of Barnsley in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, his second successive start after starring in a 3-0 win at Southampton last weekend. United boss Ten Hag is expected to make new £50million signing Manuel Ugarte and England star Kobbie Mainoo his first-choice central midfield pairing this season.

With skipper Bruno Fernandes occupying the No.10 role, that leaves Eriksen little scope for selection, but the Denmark international is determined to show he can still play a key role for United.

Eriksen, 32, who is in the final year of his contract, said: “I feel very good being at United. If they told me to leave, I would leave, but I didn’t hear that.

“I’m also a guy who likes being in a place where my family is settled and at the same time being in a place where I can benefit and play, that’s always going to be my aim.

“It’s difficult to ask the manager in the off-season how many minutes I’m going to get in a season. If he starts promising minutes to players, we’re going to have a long season.

“There was no speaking in that sense, just head down, work hard and focus on each game. There’s one year left on my contract, so my focus is going to be on this year, going full out and see what happens afterwards.”

Eriksen said United must build on their back-to-back wins and take the confidence from them into Saturday's trip to Crystal Palace, where they were humiliated 4-0 towards the end of last season.

Asked about the importance of momentum, Eriksen said: “It’s something we should have and I hope we will take it with us. It’s only two games and two wins, but it’s our aim now to keep this consistency, “It's not just about scoring [lots] of goals a game, although that would be nice, just winning the games and getting a good feeling going into each game. I hope at the weekend we continue that.”

Eriksen is determined to fight for his place at Man Utd

Eriksen insisted United's players were unaffected by all the noise surrounding them and Ten Hag after they lost back-to-back league games against Brighton and arch rivals Liverpool, the latter a 3-0 humbling at Old Trafford.

“We were on an international break, so we don’t see that much of what is going on at your club,” said Eriksen.

“When you’re away with international team your focus is going to be on that. You’re in that environment, so you’re going to read about your national team, the games and the opponents you’re playing, not so much United.

“But when you’re at United, it’s always up and down in some weird way, with people talking from the outside.”
