Ralf Schumacher has torn into Ron Dennis

Former Jordan F1 star Ralf Schumacher claims he “couldn’t work with a man like” Ron Dennis in a bruising blast at the ex-McLaren boss.

The German enjoyed a decade-long career in F1 having driven for Jordan, Williams and Toyota. Schumacher, the brother of seven-time world champion Michael, was given his first opportunity in 1997.

Eddie Jordan was the man to give him his first chance before Schumacher’s move to Williams two years later. The pair recently reunited on the Formula For Success podcast.

Jordan asked if he was the worst team boss he had ever had. However, Schumacher actually ended up tearing into a man who he never worked under - former McLaren chief Ron Dennis.

He replied: “No, that’s not true. First of all, [you] gave me the opportunity. And it could have been worse: I could have ended up with Ron Dennis, so I’m completely happy that that didn’t happen, I have to say. I think I couldn’t work with a man like that, so I’m happy.

“For Eddie, it was his business, his baby, and I’m sure it wasn’t always easy. And I remember that time we made proper motor racing: 16 to 18 times a year, amazing cars, sounds, look, we had a nice track, we had nice catering – not as big as today, but always fancy and for 10 per cent of the money. Recently not, but before the budget cap.”

Schumacher spent just two campaigns with Jordan, finishing 11th and 10th before a switch to Williams. He went on to enjoy success with the team - with his best finish coming in 2001 with fourth spot in the Constructors Championship.

He also claimed five victories during his time with Williams before a move to Toyota. Meanwhile, McClaren ended up winning seven F1 crowns during Dennis’ time at the helm.

Schumacher was not the only one who had a problem with Dennis. Former Manchester United and England star David Beckham had a tense showdown with him at a New Year’s Eve event in 2016.

The problem allegedly arose from Dennis sitting in Beckham’s reserved seating at a performance by his wife Victoria and son Cruz. A source quoted by The Sun said: "There were name cards on the table which Ron failed to notice. He thought he could sit wherever he wanted.

"However, when the Beckhams finished their meal and headed out, they saw their seats were taken. Becks was fuming. It was a throwback to his early football days when he used to show his temper on the pitch.

"He really didn't hold back. He believed Ron was rude. He was so incensed he felt the need to put him in his place - despite the fact the row was in full view of other guests. The pair were really going at it."
