Editor’s Note: Goodbye, Vertex

The New York Times will take down Vertex on Aug. 29.

Aug. 8, 2024

My favorite part of this job is creating new things. I love the feeling of laboring with a group of kindred spirits to make something we enjoy, and then putting it out in the world for other people to enjoy with us.

One of my least favorite parts of the job is having to decide when to take something down. As we increase the number of games — in the last three years we’ve added three — we constantly need to evaluate how to best use our resources. As a result, we’ve decided to stop publishing Vertex, a visual logic game akin to painting by numbers, on Aug. 29.

“The privilege of being a small part of so many people’s day has brought me great joy and has been a source of strength during challenging times,” said Burgess Voshell, who has constructed Vertex puzzles since 2020. “I am deeply grateful to The New York Times for the opportunity and to every Vertex fan for your support and enthusiasm over the last four and a half years. Thank you for sharing in this experience with me, and a special thank you to everyone who has reached out to reveal the ways you’ve found meaning through play.”

We know this is disappointing to the many solvers who have found the game meditative and beautiful, as well as to our constructors. We’re disappointed, too. Vertex is one of the puzzles that ushered in the current era of NYT Games, which started with just the Crossword and in a few short years grew into a place with eight daily puzzles, including the ever popular Wordle and Connections.

If you still need a visual puzzle fix, Tiles was added to the app in 2023. And of course, we have more things cooking that we can’t wait to show you in the coming months.

As always, thank you for solving with us.
