Thornhill, Sunshine Coast
The community of Thornhill is situated just outside Port Elizabeth, which is part of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan in the Eastern Cape. This is a small area, and many of those inhabiting it work in Port Elizabeth or Jeffrey�s Bay, due to its being positioned so conveniently between the two (approximately 45 kilometres from the Friendly City), or on the many farms of the region.
Thornhill is situated amongst the rolling hills that characterise the farmlands and countryside of the Eastern Cape. So, while most of the local community is economically challenged, they enjoy spectacular surrounds, and often find work on the smallholdings and farms that are dotted around the landscape.
Much of the appeal of this area lies in its being secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city life, and in its abundance of verdant vegetation, spectacular wildlife and impressive variety of birds. African Dawn is an animal sanctuary that is situated in Thornhill. This sanctuary promotes the care of injured or abandoned animals, which include a plethora of bird species.
As Port Elizabeth continues to expand, the conveniences of daily life get a little closer to the outlying region of Thornhill, making the necessary facilities and amenities accessible to those visiting this beautiful area.
