Modderfontein, East Rand
Modderfontein is a scenic part of the East Rand in the Gauteng Province. It is small, with a total area of less than half a square kilometre and a population of around 500 people. Still, it has plenty to offer those looking for a serene escape and gorgeous landscapes.
Modderfontein was initially established as a mining town, and the area continues to feature as one of the country�s traditional mining and industrial regions. The Modderfontein Reserve is a precious resource here, and has added much to the appeal of the town and its surrounds, thanks to this reserve�s commitment to making as little impact as possible on the indigenous fauna and flora that makes South Africa so special.
This reserve hosts a free five kilometre park run every Saturday morning to showcase the pretty views and idyllic setting, followed by a coffee at the Val Bonne Country Estate. At 275 hectares, it is this province�s second-largest private reserve and includes dams, savannahs and rolling hills, which boast about South Africa�s incredible beauty quite aptly.
The Modderfontein Golf Club is also located in this quiet corner of Gauteng, and is proud to achieve its status as one of the top 100 courses in the country over and over again. Its parkland layout and the long green fairways that are flanked by tall trees make this course very special; whether you are a golfing pro or simply like to test your swing every so often. This is an 18-hole course and is equipped with an event venue, complete with a dance floor.
Other towns that are closest to Modderfontein include Antwerp, Avalon, and Lakeside. In addition, it is only around 15 kilometres from the shopping and commercial hotspot of Sandton and Johannesburg. This means that, despite being in the heart of the tranquillity of the countryside, Modderfontein enjoys all of the conveniences and amenities of the big city within very close proximity.
