The University of Cape Town stands tall and proud on the mountainside, overlooking some of the prettiest residential areas of the city. Having been founded in 1829, this public research university is an integral part of the heritage and history of Cape Town and is the main tertiary education institute in the Western Cape Province.

During the apartheid regime that dominated South Africa between 1960 and 1990, UCT students were known for their liberal approach and their willingness to fight for social and political freedom. Today, this university and its students are still representative of forward thinking and a modern African optimism.
UCT has a number of different campuses that are scattered in different locations around Cape Town. Upper Campus is on Rhodes Estate, which is on the slopes that culminate beautifully in Devil�s Peak. Here, the faculties of Humanities, Commerce, Science and Engineering are found. This campus is particularly beautiful, boasting stunning old buildings that date back to the 1920�s, covered in green ivy and frequented by starlings and squirrels. The main library is also on Upper Campus and houses most of the university�s 1.3 million volumes.
Middle Campus and Lower Campus are scattered through Rondebosch, Mowbray and Rosebank and comprise the faculties of Law, Music, Economics and many of the residences and sporting facilities. There is also a Medical School Campus in Observatory, and the Fine Arts and Drama departments, which are situated in the heart of the city, close to a number of popular Cape Town attractions (including Table Mountain and Long Street).
In addition to the architecture and the natural beauty of the University of Cape Town, it is also a pleasure to visit for its contribution to local and national history and culture.
