Port Elizabeth Library in Central Hill, Eastern Cape (original) (raw)

About Port Elizabeth Library

The gorgeous building of the Port Elizabeth Main Library is found in the north-west corner of Market Square in Port Elizabeth.

The building was officially opened in 1902 and is well regarded as a fine example of Victorian Gothic architecture. The terra-cotta faade was manufactured in England and the marble statue of Queen Victoria is Sicilian made and was erected and unveiled in 1903.

The library had humble beginnings back in 1844 and begun as the Port Elizabeth News Society, there was only a small collection of books and a large variety of English magazines, London newspapers and the main South African paper.

At a public meeting in 1848 it was decided to start a subscription library. This became increasingly popular and as it grew the venues changed until it was officially opened in the current building. The building was declared a national monument in 1983 and visitors are welcome to browse inside the library.
