Carl Thunberg Route in Riebeek West, Western Cape (original) (raw)

About Carl Thunberg Route

Start: Pulpit Rock Winery, north of Riebeek West on the R311
Finish: back where you started
Duration: 2, 3 hours
Fitness: moderate
Our tip: you can get your permit from the Riebeek Valley Tourism on the square in Riebeek Kasteel

This route is also named after an influential player in the history of Riebeek Kasteel. Carl Thunberg was a Swedish botanist who first scaled Kasteelberg in 1774 and left a written description of the event.

This hike follows his route.

The initial part of the hike heads between vines of the working farm, and you are requested not to wander from the path for this reason.

Look out for a jeep track that runs up the side of the mountain, to the right of a gully. You follow this until it turns into a narrow trail on which you will find a cairn to show you where to head up.

A large wild olive tree is your next landmark, after which you continue on the path up and around a series of rocky outcrops. From here your journey to the summit is unmarked, but not difficult.

Views from the top are incredible and on a clear day you should see Table Mountain, the Piketberg and the Cederberg.

Note:
The Pieter Cruythoff Route and Carl Thunberg Route are two hikes that are relatively new to the Riebeek Valley. What makes them so attractive is their proximity to Cape Town and their brevity both are short, but steep slogs up Kasteelberg.
