The Lord Milner Hotel in Matjiesfontein, Western Cape (original) (raw)

The Lord Milner Hotel is a Matjiesfontein hotel providing accommodation in 50 guest rooms for anyone visiting the Karoo region.

Matjiesfontein was founded in 1884 by the legendary and energetic Scottish railwayman James Douglas Logan. It became established as a fashionable Victotian health spa, and is now well known for its splendid historical buildings and a peace and timelessness that is rare. In testament, the entire Village was preserved as a National Heritage Site in 1975 under the direction of revered hotelier David Rawdon.

Matjiesfontein is a feast for the imagination as between these walls lie a colourful history that includes international cricketers, Olive Schreiner's residency, fortification during the Boer war as headquarters of the Cape Command, refuge for Jamieson Raid reformers, and controversial war crimes hearings.

Breakfast and Dining

Dining Room:
Located off the main entrance of the Hotel, the dining room boasts the same historic ambiance found throughout Matjiesfontein. Again a Victorian setting filled with period antiques. Here breakfast and dinner. We offer traditional South African Cuisine with a modern twist. The dress code for dinner is smart casual ( but this is merely a suggestion).

The Lairds Arms:
Right next door to the Lord Milner Hotel is the Laird's Arms. Enjoy a quiet pint or pub lunch, but our Karoo Lamb Curry has to be the stand-out!. Pub lunches are served daily 12h00 to 14h30.

The Coffee House:
This occupies what was once Logan's General Store of 1888. Home cooked hearty breakfasts, healthy light lunches, and a fine selection of home-baked scones and cakes.

1. The town bustled with contract workers busy on various projects in the area detracting from the overall historical feel that we expected. 2. They did not have our room confirmed and it took approx 20 mins to sort out the problem 3. We stayed in room 12 - the balcony was filthy and it was evident that it was not cleaned in weeks - heaps of bird droppings 4. Some of the rooms in the hotel was inaccessible as it was converted to meeting rooms 5. The car museum was vacated - cars were parked in the parking area across the hotel to make room for the contractors 6. The train was unavailable as a medical team were conducting medicals on workers 7. The Standard Bank was vacated and converted to a meeting room 8. The train station had a room converted to a meeting room - whilst walking in the museum below we heard the voices upstairs whilst they were working The hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating - the food was good. The hotel was very 'dusty' and in some windows there were cobwebs - it is evident that the hotel is not cleaned regularly. We stayed 2 days to ensure we get the whole Matjiesfontein experience but as a 'tourist' we were disappointed with the town converted to a 'project office'.
