Sean Combs confused himself with his name changes

Sean 'P Diddy' Combs has switched up his name multiple times, even leading to a bit of confusion for himself.

The rapper, birth name Sean Combs, has had a lot of different names over the years, with each change happening for different reasons. As a child, he earned the nickname Puff because he'd "huff and puff" when upset, which inspired his initial stage name Puff Daddy as he rose to fame with Bad Boy Records.

Legal issues in 2001 led to a change. After being found not guilty on charges of gun possession and bribery, he announced: "No more Puff Daddy. The first week in June, we're going to have a name change ceremony. I'm not doing it as serious as Prince, I just want something fresh. I'm rocking with just P Diddy now."

This new moniker came from his late friend Biggie Smalls, real name Christopher George Latore Wallace, who had suggested it before his death in 1997. But the name change saga didn't end there.

By 2005, Combs felt the "P" was a career hindrance and opted for simply After changing his name so many times, Diddy confessed: "Nobody knew what to call me.

"I'd notice that people were uncomfortable when I'd meet them for the first time and then they'd ask me what they should call me. I even started to get confused myself and when I would call someone on the telephone, it took me a long time to explain who I was. Too long."

In 2017, he sought yet another moniker change, distancing from his earlier labels with an Instagram declaration. Combs said: "I've been praying on this and I know it's risky because it could come off corny to some people, but I've decided to change my name again...

"I will not be answering to Puffy, Diddy, Puff Daddy or any of my other monikers but Love or Brother Love." Once again in May 2022, during a chat with Ellen DeGeneres, he announced a fresh name selection. "I decided that I'm just going to go with the name Diddy. See, Diddy's my nickname. Love is my real name," he proclaimed.
