Bill Belichick believes the New York Jets have what it takes to be Super Bowl contenders this season having already praised their roster with many fans hoping to see him take over from Robert Saleh after his shock dismissal.

The Jets fired Saleh on Tuesday after their loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. The timing of the decision is intriguing with the team having a 2-3 start to the season and still looking to be playoff contenders.

The Jets have kept both coordinators in Nathaniel Hackett as OC and Jeff Ulbrich as DC - with the latter set to be their interim head coach until a replacement is found.

It remains unclear whether Belichick will look to return to coaching this season, seemingly enjoying his time working with the media amid his new relationship in his private life. Some reports suggest he will only return to the sidelines in 2025.

But returning to New York would be an intriguing offer if presented to him - a team that some picked as favorites to win the AFC East. And Belichick has already publicly stated he is a big fan of the Jets' roster.

Earlier this offseason, he said: "The Jets are one of the hardest teams to prepare for from a skill standpoint because of Breece Hall. Outstanding running back that has the ability to take the ball the distance. He's very good in the passing game.

"Defensively you want to do everything you can to get the ball out of his hands and load the box. The problem is, if you load the box you're singled out there on Wilson, and that's a tall order. Aaron (Rodgers) knows how to use them and Aaron will know where the defense is heavy and where they're light and be able to work the ball there.

"They just need to solidify the consistency of the offensive line, but on paper I think they have a good offense, and they're hard to defend with a good quarterback, a great wide receiver and a great running back."
