Research paper thumbnail of Cultural Beliefs, Social Support and Societal Ascribed Roles as Determinants of Patients’ Perception of Illness Symptom

International Journal of Social Work and Human Services Practice, 2014

Given the roles of Patients' perception of illness symptom in recovery and response to treatment,... more Given the roles of Patients' perception of illness symptom in recovery and response to treatment, this paper examines the influence of cultural beliefs, social support and roles ascribed to the patient by the society on their perception of illness symptom with the view to enhance it and obtain the associated advantages. The study was targeted at all the in-patients and outpatients of the forty-six state-owned hospitals of Oyo state in Nigeria, out of which nine hospitals were randomly selected. Fifty (50) in-patients and outpatients were selected by convenience sampling from each of the selected hospitals to participate in the study, making a total of 450 respondents. Only the responses from 370 respondents were usable as some did not complete the questionnaire properly or refused to give necessary and relevant information. The instrument for the study is a questionnaire titled questionnaire on patients perception of illness symptoms. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test chi-square analysis, multiple regression analysis and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results show that a considerable percentage of the patients were positive in their perception of their illnesses. These perceptions do not differ between male and female patients but are different on the basis of age. Societal ascribed roles seem to influence perception of illness than both cultural beliefs and social support either combined or individually.

Objective: This study explores the Mental Health Service User's experience on access to the Nigeria labour market. Method: The study adopts an interpretive phenomenological analysis and conducts an unstructured interview method to investigate participants' experiences and the sense they make out of their daily struggles in seeking employment. Data were thematically coded and supported by participant's narratives. Results: The findings generated two main themes with six additional subthemes: (1) The hindrance to the MHSU's economic participation is linked to hostility and discrimination, and institutional factors (the lack of credible response in policy and practice). Also, (2). close networks remain significant for the group's economic and social adjustment, but i...

Results: The findings generated two main themes with six additional subthemes: (1) The hindrance to the MHSU's economic participation is linked to hostility and discrimination, and institutional factors (the lack of credible response in policy and practice). Also, (2). close networks remain significant for the group's economic and social adjustment, but it is often not available for all in the labour market. Conclusion: The paper increases our understanding of informal networks' crucial role when navigating the labour market and shows that it may have severe implications in how policy functions. A more comprehensive study is needed to examine the nature of the informal support system that facilitates access to some and ostracizes others' needs. Consideration should be given to the policy environment, the role and efficacy of the non-governmental agencies, and the family networks system to understand hindrances to the engagement of MHSU.

It is worth nothing that literature on the employment situation of this group are very few in Nigeria; available studies focused on improvement of services and public attitude, little is known about the subjective experience of individuals in recovery on work accessibility. This book explored perceptions of young persons in recovery from schizophrenia on access to employment, intending to make sense of the meaning they ascribed to work, their experiences and ways of coping. Interpretative phenomenological is thought useful in making sense out the sense participants make out of their experiences. The results open us to how shame becomes their embodiment be it in interpersonal relationships, workplace, and in the community. Housing issues and complication arising from medication was also noted. The study focused on the description of coping with mental illness symptoms, societal discrimination varied, and among those with better prognosis, evident of a better social adjustment. Low response from the government also emerged as a theme in the write-up. The need for awareness to reduce the impact of stigma was unequivocal among participants. The recent reform in the Nigerian Mental Health Policies 2013 articulates the need for collaboration with employers to bridge the socioeconomic gap between the general populace and the group. However, the inequality persists, and social justice seems unattainable for these individuals. It aimed at identifying the importance of meaningful engagement to consumers of mental health and elaborate on barriers to their employment. This dimension is considered necessary in offering an insight into the social reality of young persons in recovery from schizophrenia on access to work in Nigeria. The researcher considered the study as exploratory due to the scarcity of literature in this area in Nigeria. The study concluded by highlighting the role of government in enhancing employment for this vulnerable group and suggested further studies in this area. The content of this book is categorised into five chapters: summary of the study and background, theoretical frameworks, research objectives, method and data analysis.

the factors resident in the students themselves. Understanding what students usually attribute
their success in any learning tasks to could help in shaping their self-belief system. This study
examined mathematics attribution styles of secondary schools students in Osun State. The study
adopted survey method. Nine hundred students were randomly selected from SSS1 and SSS2
students from nine secondary schools within the state. The results showed that most of the
students attributed their success in mathematical tasks to effort, extrinsic and intrinsic factors.
The results also showed that while gender of students had no significant influence on students’
attribution of their performance in mathematics, the academic disciplines had significant
influence on this variable. Based on these results, appropriate discussions and recommendations
were made.
