Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park, Scotland
The small Trossachs town of Callander is the eastern gateway to The Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park which includes about 720 square miles of some of the best scenery and wildlife in Scotland. Callander also boasts more hotels, B&Bs and other accommodation than any other town in the National Park. You can find 20 Munros (mountains over 3000 ft), 22 large lochs, lakes and 50 rivers and streams. In the west, Ben Lomond towers over its namesake, Loch Lomond - the largest expanse of freshwater in the uk, including the English lakes. In the east side of the park around Callander, the lochs and forests are a joy for those who want the peace and scenery of Loch Katrine, Loch Earn and smaller lochs, forests and rivers. The Queen Elizabeth Forest Park stretches from Aberfoyle and Loch Ard in the west, through the Trossachs to Loch Lubnaig in the east and offers a fantastic variety of walks and cycleways. An ongoing project will eventually replace the forest plantations with native trees. Within the National Park you can enjoy walking, cycling, abseiling, fishing, pony trekking and rock-climbing. The West Highland Way - a long distance footpath cuts through the Trossachs National park on its way to Fort William.
