Radio broadcasting in India began in 1923 (7BY Bombay), FM radio was introduced in 1972 in the Madras (Chennai), DRM digital radio launched in 2012. State-owned All India Radio – AIR 
(Akashvani) was formed in 1936 and today is the largest radio network in the country, transmitting on MW, SW (analogue and Digital DRM) and FM. Broadcasting is regulated by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting – MIB . Several private networks and many community radio stations also operate on FM. Currently there are over 300 AM (analog and digital MW) and 800 FM radio transmitters in India. Primary languages on radio are Hindi and English, with regional stations in Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and other languages.

After 1947, Radio Dhaka continued its transmission as a station of Pakistan Broadcasting Service, in 1971 it was renamed to Radio Bangladesh. Today, Bangladesh Betar is the largest radio network in the country, transmitting on MW, SW and FM. Broadcasting is regulated by the Ministry of Information – MoI . State-owned Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation – PBC was established in 1947 and today is the largest radio network in the country, transmitting on MW, SW and FM. Broadcasting is regulated by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority – PEMRA . Several private networks and many community and university radio stations also operate on FM.
