Printed-on-Demand: a list of some of the OUP (Oxford) and CUP (Cambridge) authors and titles now available, of some of the other publishers involved, and notes

The lists that follow show the OUP and CUP authors and titles licensed to American Print-on-Demand facsimile specialists Lightning Print Inc., (in 2000 renamed Lightning Source) at Lightningprint.comand 1136 Heil Quaker Boulevard, La Vergne, Tennessee, USA 37086
Lightning Print is a subsidiary of US book wholesalers Ingram Corporation, which in November 1998 was bought out by bookselling giant Barnes & Noble. The takeover caused a storm of protest throughout the US book trade, for it seemed an anti-competitive move that threatened market freedom (Ingram had been the principal supplier of independent bookshops). In December, prompted by Senator Ron Wyden, The Federal Trade Commission (the American equivalent of UK's Monopolies and Mergers Commission) launched an investigation into the deal.
The OUP author list was first compiled by AKME in 1999 and has been updated in January 2001, having multiplied roughly 5 times in size during the interim. Meanwhile, Lightning Print has devised a new, somewhat crazy cataloguing system, now listing the books (within publisher) alphabetically by their titles, which are often abbreviated and unpunctuated. For authors' convenience, AKME has therefore recollated the OUP list alphabetically by author, preserving the often idiotic results of Lightning Print's new abbreviation and classification systems (any mistakes may well be reproductions of those in the Lightning Print entries).
AKME's CUP list (again recollated alphabetically by author) follows the OUP list below, but for a fully updated January 2001 CUP list (which has grown from about 70 to 650 titles in the interim) click on the link to a separate list in Lightning Print's own format (i.e. alphabetically by title. These lists are not exhaustive, for of course other companies (in USA? UK? China?) may be similarly licensed, and many publishers now produce their out-of-print titles on-demand 'in-house'. The OUP and CUP author lists are followed by a list of some of the other major publishers whose books are now available on-demand via Lightning Print, the link to the fully updated CUP list, and notes and some interesting extracts from Lightning Print's FAQ file. **6. Who owns the rights to the Book? The publisher. Not only does the publisher retain content rights and control of the titles, but LPI requires no exclusivity of the titles.
**15. Who is responsible for paying author royalties? Author royalties are paid by the publisher.
**There is no question asking whether there is any obligation, and if so whose, to inform the author of what is going on.
