Municipality

The municipality of Caplan (2,024 inhabitants in 2016; 8,573 ha) is located on the Bay of Chaleur.

Caplan was established in 1875 by Acadian (55%) and Irish, Scottish and French (45%) colonists.
The etymology of Caplan is obscure. Some claim that the village was named for Indian John Kaplan. Other says that the earlier English-speaking colonists called the cliffs Cape Land. A more straightforward, but equally unsubstantiated etymology relies on the capelin fish (Mallotus villosus), which is quite common in the Bay of Chaleur.

Municipal flag

The logo is a modernization of the previous one.
The wheat spike represents agriculture, the sun represents the inhabitants' warmth, and the water the village's maritime character.

The wheat stem is increased to form a sun while the water waves cut the spike by smooth moves, which makes the image dynamic. This energetic rendition is a metaphoric symbol if the very active social commitment of Caplan's inhabitants.
