Ordinary chondrite, (H4)
Found, 1977; 15 kg, single stone
A stone collected as a rock sample in 1977 was identified as a meteorite in 1980. The meteorite is an H4 chondrite, olivine composition (Fa18.7), and contains a number of Al-rich chondrules which appear to sample a very ancient solar system environment. A cosmic ray exposure age of 2-3 Ma has been reported.
Ybbsitz is the second most massive of the Austria's 7 confirmed meteorites and its only member of the H ordinary chondrite group (high in total iron) [as of early 2015]. The main mass has been kept at the Naturhistorisches Museum (NHM) in Wien, Austria.
