The Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands is an Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean.
The islands comprise 27 small coral islands in two atolls approximately 2,950 kms north-west of Perth in a small archipelago midway between Australia and Sri Lanka and near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The atolls form a U-shaped group with Horsbourgh Island centring in the northern part of the group. North Keeling Island is further north again.
The two atolls were formed from two undersea mounts that are part of the Vening Meinesz Seamounts.
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands were the only coral atolls that Charles Darwin visited in 1836 when he developed his well-known theory of coral atoll formation.
North Keeling Island is some 27.4km further north from Horsburgh Island in the northern section of the two atolls.
