Formula:

SiO2

Name:

Pliny the Elder stated that it was named after Sardis, in Lydia, where it was first discovered; but the name probably came with the stone from Persia (Persian سرد, sered = yellowish-red). Another possible derivation is from the Greek σάρξ (sarx, "flesh").

A variety of Chalcedony

A brown to brownish-red translucent variety of chalcedony.
