The 1977 NHL Amateur Draft was the 15th NHL Entry Draft. It was held at the Mount Royal Hotel in Montreal, Quebec. It was notable for the inclusion of players being drafted at 20 years of age. This was the only draft in which the Cleveland Barons as a distinctive franchise drafted, as they would fold prior to the 1978 draft. The last active player in the NHL from this draft class was Gordie Roberts, who played his last NHL game in the 1993–94 season. Insgesamt wurden 185 Spieler in 17 Runden gezogen, wobei in den letzten Runden nur noch wenige Teams Spieler auswählten und ab Runde 16 lediglich die Detroit Red Wings weitere Spieler zogen. Unter den ersten zehn gewählten Spielern schaffte es nur Doug Wilson zu größerer Bekanntheit. Der sicherlich beste Spieler im Draft, Mike Bossy, wurde erst als 15. ausgewählt. Er war einer der Spieler, der großen Anteil an den drei Stanley-Cup-Siegen der New York Islanders zum Beginn der 1980er hatte. Il quindicesimo draft della National Hockey League si svolse ancora via teleconferenza presso gli uffici della National Hockey League di Montréal, sebbene fossero iniziate a circolare voci di una futura fusione delle migliori squadre della World Hockey Association con la NHL. I problemi finanziari che l'anno precedente avevano visto mettere in pericolo la franchigia dei Kansas City Scouts quell'anno coinvolsero invece la squadra dei Cleveland Barons, sull'orlo del fallimento. I Barons riuscirono temporaneamente a risolvere i loro problemi, permettendo lo svolgimento regolare del draft. Due giorni più tardi si sarebbe svolto il draft WHA, tuttavia dato il clima meno teso fra le due leghe non vi furono preoccupazioni per il breve arco di tempo lasciato per mettere contratto i giocatori selezionati dalle franchigie NHL. Il draft del 1977 fu l'ultimo ad essersi svolto in segreto, mentre dagli anni successivi sarebbe divenuto un evento pubblico. I Detroit Red Wings selezionarono il centro Dale McCourt dai St. Catharines Fincups, i Colorado Rockies invece come seconda scelta puntarono sul difensore , proveniente dai New Westminster Bruins, mentre i Washington Capitals scelsero in terza posizione il difensore dei Montreal Juniors. Fra i 185 giocatori selezionati 104 erano attaccanti, 57 erano difensori mentre 24 erano portieri.
