Bei aller Annäherung an Manet bewahrte sie jedoch einen selbständigen Stil, häufig geprägt von lichthaltigen Farben und einer starken Betonung graphischer Mittel. Berthe Morisot war die erste Frau in der Gruppe der Impressionisten. 1874 nahm sie mit neun Werken an der ersten Impressionistenausstellung teil und war bis 1886, mit Ausnahme von 1879, an allen Ausstellungen dieser Gruppe vertreten. Im Dezember 1874 heiratete sie Eugène Manet, den Bruder Édouard Manets. Im Folgejahr wurde ihre Tochter Julie Manet geboren. In 1864, Morisot exhibited for the first time in the highly esteemed Salon de Paris. Sponsored by the government and judged by Academicians, the Salon was the official, annual exhibition of the Académie des beaux-arts in Paris. Her work was selected for exhibition in six subsequent Salons until, in 1874, she joined the "rejected" Impressionists in the first of their own exhibitions, which included Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley. It was held at the studio of the photographer Nadar. Morisot went on to participate in all but one of the following eight impressionist exhibitions, between 1874 and 1886.
