Birendranagar (Nepali वीरेन्द्रनगर Bīrendranagar, vielfach als Surkhet bezeichnet) ist eine Stadt (Munizipalität) im westlichen Nepal und Verwaltungssitz des Distriktes Surkhet in der Provinz Karnali. Die Stadt liegt am Nordrand des Surkhettales auf einer Höhe von 688 m. 2011 hatte sie 47.914 Einwohner. Das Tal, ca. 9 km lang und 6 km breit, ist vom Terai durch eine bis zu 1500 m hohe Hügelkette getrennt. Birendranagar ist planmäßig als administratives Zentrum entstanden und nach ihrem Begründer, König Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev (वीरेन्द्र वीर विक्रम शाह) (1945–2001) benannt. In der Mitte des Tales, etwa 3 km südlich von Birendranagar gibt es eine kleine, 70 bis 80 m hohe bewaldete Erhebung mit den Ruinen des buddhistischen Tempels , der vermutlich im 12. Birendranagar (Nepali: वीरेन्द्रनगर) officially Birendranagar Municipality is a city in Surkhet District in Karnali Province of Nepal.It is the district headquarter of Surkhet District and also the capital city of Karnali province. As of March 2022, Birendranagar has a population of 154,886 making it the 17th largest city of Nepal. It is the largest city of karnali province and 7th largest in Western Nepal. It is one of the fastest growing cities of Nepal. Birendranagar is the destination of two national highways i.e Ratna Highway and Karnali Highway. It is one of the constituent city of Ratna Highway Metropolitan Areas along with Nepalgunj and Kohalpur. Birendranagar is compromise of panoramic view of Mahabharata and chure ranges and the plain of . Birendranagar is a major trade center in mid-western Nepal and is considered as the most expensive city to live in Nepal. In February 2018, the city was made the capital of the province of Karnali. At the 2011 census the city's population was 100,458 in 12,029 households. This city is located in the Surkhet Valley at the northern Bank of Bheri River which separates it from Bheriganga municipality. Birendranagar is named in honour of the late King Birendra, who planned and established it as the first planned town in Nepal. Birendranagar is located in a valley and surrounded by hills.
