Seine Eltern ließen sich scheiden, als er drei Jahre alt war. Er trat 1937 als Second Lieutenant in das Regiment 12th Lancers ein, diente im Zweiten Weltkrieg in Frankreich und Nordafrika, wurde verwundet und geriet in Kriegsgefangenschaft. Shand erhielt 1940 das Military Cross und 1942 den Bar (Balken zum Orden). Er wurde 1942 zum Major befördert und schied 1947 aus der British Army aus. Von 1974 bis 1992 war er Deputy Lieutenant von East Sussex. Am 2. Januar 1946 heiratete er Rosalind Maud Cubitt, Tochter von Roland Calvert Cubitt, 3. Baron Ashcombe, und Sonia Rosemary Keppel, einer Tochter der Alice Keppel. Otrzymał również stopień kapitana. W styczniu 1942 r. otrzymał swój drugi Krzyż Wojenny, za osłanianie odwrotu 6 pułku strzelców Rajputany (6th Rajputana Rifles). Uczestniczył w spotkaniu z Winstonem Churchillem przez II bitwą pod El Alamein. 6 listopada 1942 r., na patrolu w okolicach Marsa Matruh został zaatakowany i wzięty do niewoli.
