Dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) are one-way or two-way short-range to medium-range wireless communication channels specifically designed for automotive use and a corresponding set of protocols and standards.

Beim europäischen DSRC handelt es sich um eine semi-passive Transpondertechnik mit sehr kleiner Kommunikationszone, die in Europa die De-facto-Norm für elektronische Mauterhebung darstellt. DSRC wurde auch außerhalb Europas als nationale Norm für Mauterhebung und Zugangskontrolle implementiert. Es handelt sich bei WAVE um eine Funktechnik für ein sogenanntes Fahrzeug-Ad-hoc-Netz (VANET, Vehicular Adhoc NETworking). Dies ist eine automatische Fahrzeug-Fahrzeug- oder auch Fahrzeug-Baken-Kommunikation. Baken sind Sendestationen am Straßenrand. Das Entscheidende an dieser Technik ist die Möglichkeit, in der Kommunikation jedes Fahrzeug zu identifizieren und jeden Link genau einem Fahrzeug oder einem Fahrzeugpaar oder -tupel in gleicher Spur zuzuordnen. Ersteres wird zum Beispiel bei der Mauterfassung verwendet. Le sigle DSRC désigne aussi l'ensemble de protocoles et de normes mis en jeu dans ce type de communications. En Octobre 1999, la Commission Fédérale des Communications (FCC) a alloué aux USA 75 MHz du spectre électromagnétique dans la bande des 5.9 GHz pour les DSRC. De même, en août 2008, l’Institut européen des normes de télécommunication (ou ETSI = European Telecommunications Standards Institute) a alloué en Europe 30 MHz du spectre dans la bande 5.9 GHz pour les DSRC. [4] Pour l'instant l'utilisation principale des DSRC se trouve dans le télépéage. Cependant les systèmes DSRC en Europe, au Japon et aux États-Unis ne sont pas, à l'heure actuelle, compatibles. D'autres applications possibles sont: * contrôle coopératif de la vitesse de croisière des véhicules * détection coopérative de collision frontale * évitement des collisions d'intersection * avertissement d'approche des véhicules d'urgence * inspection de sécurité des véhicules * signaux de priorité des véhicules d'urgence * paiements de stationnement électronique * dédouanement et inspections de sécurité des véhicules commerciaux * alarme depuis l'intérieur des véhicules * avertissement de retournement * sonde de collecte de données * avertissement de passages à niveaux * et d'une manière générale, tous système d'alerte d'urgence pour les véhicules Le principal intérêt de la courte portée des DSRC est d'éviter de perturber les autres systèmes de communications et de permettre une communication très localisée.
