미얀마의 교육제도는 미얀마 교육부가 주관한다. 고등교육청은 양곤과 만달레이에서 각각 활동한다. 교육 체계는 영국의 것을 본따온 것이 많으며 1세기 가까운 식민지배고 기독교식 제도가 들어왔기 때문이다. 1874년 관영고등학교가 영국식민청 주관 하에 개교했고 2년 뒤에 이곳이 양곤 대학교로 승격된다.[1] 거의 모든 학교가 정부 관영이지만 최근에는 사립학교가 영어전문학교로 등장하고 있다. 초등교육까지는 거의 의무교육이지만 국제기준으로 의무교육이 15-16세인 반면 미얀마에서는 의무교육의 수준이 9세에 머물고 있다. 논란의 여지가 있기는 하지만 유네스코의 2005년 통계발표에 따르면 미얀마의 문해율은 89.7%(남:93.7, 여:86.2)에 달한다. 연간 교육 예산은 전체 예산 중 1.2%에 불과하며 영어는 유치원 때부터 제2외국어로 교습된다. 종교재단설립 학교는 1860년대부터 출현했으며 1965년 4월 1일자로 국유화됐다.

Most of the early mission schools are since 1860 (such as La Salle schools) in Burma were nationalised on 1 April 1965 after the order restoration of general Ne Win. The Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI) finds that Myanmar is fulfilling only 84.3% of what it should be fulfilling for the right to education based on the country's level of income. HRMI breaks down the right to education by looking at the rights to both primary education and secondary education. While taking into consideration Myanmar's income level, the nation is achieving 96.7% of what should be possible based on its resources (income) for primary education but only 71.9% for secondary education.
