The First Fisher ministry (Labour) was the 6th ministry of the Government of Australia. It was led by the country's 5th Prime Minister, Andrew Fisher. The First Fisher ministry succeeded the Second Deakin ministry, which dissolved on 13 November 1908 after Labour withdrew their support and Alfred Deakin was forced to resign. The ministry was replaced by the Third Deakin ministry on 2 June 1909 after the Protectionist Party and the Anti-Socialist Party merged into the Liberal Party "fusion" and withdrew their support in order to form what became the first majority government in federal Australian history.

Nach einer Abstimmungsniederlage im Parlament am 27. Mai 1909 bat Premierminister Fisher den Generalgouverneur Earl of Dudley um die Auflösung des Parlaments, was dieser jedoch ablehnte. Billy Hughes, who died in 1952, was the last surviving member of the First Fisher ministry; Hughes was also the last surviving member of the Watson ministry, Third Fisher ministry, Second Hughes ministry and Third Hughes ministry. Andrew Fisher, ancien mineur ayant travaillé enfant dans les mines de charbon en Écosse, devient alors Premier ministre à la tête d'un gouvernement minoritaire travailliste. Ce gouvernement syndicaliste et ouvrier fait adopter en 1908 la loi pour la création de Canberra comme capitale fédérale, passe commande pour trois destroyers en vue de créer la Royal Australian Navy, et introduit une formation militaire obligatoire pour les jeunes hommes du pays. Ces mesures sont soutenues par l'opposition, mais lorsque le gouvernement propose un amendement constitutionnel qui permettrait au gouvernement fédéral de conditionner la protection des industries australiennes à la protection des emplois de leurs ouvriers, les partis d'opposition s'accordent à voter le 27 mai 1909 la défiance de la Chambre des représentants à l'encontre du gouvernement. Celui-ci doit alors démissionner, et une coalition majoritaire des partis d'opposition forme le . Gabinet powstał po tym, jak ALP wycofała swojej poparcie dla tworzonego przez Partię Protekcjonistyczną, mniejszościowego trzeciego gabinetu Deakina. Wcześniej oba ugrupowania prowadziły negocjacje w sprawie zawarcia koalicji, lecz wobec ich niepowodzenia, ALP postanowiła samodzielnie przejąc władzę. Sama również nie posiadała jednak większości, gdyż po wyborach z 1906 parlament pozostawał podzielony pomiędzy labourzystów, protekcjonistów i antysocjalistów. Dlatego także gabinet Fishera przez cały okres swojego istnienia miał charakter mniejszościowy. W 1909 obie główne partie opozycyjne połączyły się, tworząc Związkową Partię Liberalną (CLP). Nowe ugrupowanie miało dość głosów w Izbie Reprezentantów, aby obalić gabinet Fishera i zastąpić go własnym, większościowym czwartym gabinetem Deakina. (pl) |
