Foncebadón es una localidad española perteneciente al municipio de Santa Colomba de Somoza, en la comarca de la Maragatería, provincia de León, comunidad autónoma de Castilla y León. Estuvo abandonado hasta el resurgir de la peregrinación a Santiago en la última década del siglo XX. Posee tres bares-restaurantes, cuatro albergues, uno de ellos con categoría de Albergue Turístico, dos con categoría de Turístico de los Caminos a Santiago y un cuarto albergue de peregrinos sin fin lucrativo, un bar-tienda de ultramarinos y una pensión. Desde poco antes del resurgir de la peregrinación, algunos antiguos habitantes de Foncebadón y sus familiares más cercanos están volviendo a rehabilitar las viviendas abandonadas o derruidas que quedaban.

Der Ort war lange Zeit wegen seiner Lage direkt vor dem Übergang über den Monte Irago, dem Puerto de Foncebadón mit dem Cruz de Ferro, sehr wichtig für den Jakobsweg. Eine erste Erwähnung gibt es aus dem 10. Jahrhundert, spätestens im 12. Jahrhundert errichtete hier der Einsiedler Gaucelmo ein Hospital und eine Herberge für Pilger: Alfons VI. gewährte in einer Urkunde von 1103 auf Bitten Gaucelmos der Herberge Foncebadón und der Kirche San Salvador de Irago Immunität. Im Mittelalter werden die Salvador-Kirche, ein dem Heiligen Johannes geweihtes Hospiz und die zum Hospiz gehörige Kirche der Hl. Maria Magdalena erwähnt. Später ließ sich hier eine von Astorga abhängige Einsiedlergemeinschaft nieder, zeitweise gab es auch Posten und Würde des Abtes von Foncebadón. Im Unabhängigkeitskrieg gegen die napoleonischen Truppen wurde das Dorf zerstört und danach wieder aufgebaut. Spätestens mit der Landflucht in Spanien zu Beginn der zweiten Hälfte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts erlitt der Ort einen dramatischen Bevölkerungsverlust, der schließlich bei einer Einwohnerzahl null endete und den Ort in den 1980er Jahren zum Geisterdorf voller Ruinen werden ließ. Der brasilianische Schriftsteller Paulo Coelho platziert vor dieser Kulisse den Kampf des Ich-Erzählers seines Romans Auf dem Jakobsweg gegen einen schwarzen Hund, der das Dämonische symbolisiert. Die Renaissance der Jakobswallfahrt rettete Foncebadón vor dem totalen Verfall. Zwar lebt erst ein Einwohner wieder ganzjährig im Dorf (Sommers belebt es sich mehr), neben einigen Privathäusern und der Pfarrkirche Santa Maria Magdalena wurden aber auch eine kleine Pilgerherberge und zwei Pensionen auf- bzw. wiederaufgebaut sowie etliche Lokale. Seit 2005 gibt es eine moderne Wasserver- und -entsorgung. Beim Verlassen des Dorfes in Richtung Cruz de Ferro trifft man auf die Ruinen der Salvador-Kirche. According to local tradition, the village was granted a tax exemption in return for planting 800 stakes in the ground to mark the path. In the 10th century, Ramiro II of León convened a religious council in the village, and in the 11th or 12th century, the hermit Guacelmo established a hospital and a church. Events such as the 16th-century Protestant Reformation and the early 19th-century Napoleonic Wars, along with the construction of new roads and railways, led to a decline in the number of pilgrims passing through the village. In the 1960s and 70s, many of Foncebadón's residents migrated to nearby cities in search of employment; by the 1990s, there were only two people, a mother and son, living among the ruins of the once-thriving settlement. In recent years, however, the Way of St. James has begun to attract thousands of modern-day pilgrims, and the new influx of travellers has inspired entrepreneurs to purchase and renovate some of the most emblematic buildings, such as the church and the hostel.
