- Ein Vollschiff ist ein Großsegler mit mindestens drei, sämtlich vollständig rahgetakelten Masten. Die Zahl der Rahen kann dabei variieren: Bei ungeteilten Mars- und Bramsegeln mit Royals (Schiffstyp Klipper) sind es vier, bei geteilten Mars- und Bramsegeln (modernes Windjammerrigg) sechs, beim Jubiläumsrigg fünf Rahen (keine Royalsegel). Der hinterste (achterste) Mast trägt ein zusätzliches Gaffelsegel (Besansegel) zur Unterstützung von Wende- und Halsemanövern. Neben dem Gaffelsegel trägt ein Rahsegler weitere Schratsegel als sogenannte Stagsegel, das sind an den Stagen befestigte Segel: vom Bugspriet zum Fockmast meist vier, selten fünf Klüversegel und zwischen den Masten typisch drei Stagsegel. - Un trois-mâts carré (ou trois-mâts franc) est un navire à voile de trois-mâts dont tous les mâts sont gréés en voiles carrées. On dit aussi que ce type de voilier porte des « phares carrés », c'est-à-dire plusieurs étages de voiles carrées (cinq le plus souvent) sur ses trois mâts, une solution apparue avec l'augmentation de la taille des navires (et consécutivement de leurs mâts) afin que les voiles restent « cargables » (repliables) par un nombre acceptable de marins. Toutes les voiles sont enverguées et leur vergue est horizontale, retenue par le milieu (voile carrée). Le mât d’artimon à l’arrière conserve en plus une brigantine à corne. Historiquement, on trouve des trois-mâts carrés notamment parmi les flûtes, les galions, les frégates, puis les clippers. Les trois-mâts carrés furent de grands bâtiments marchands, navires de guerre (corvette à vaisseaux de ligne) et des cap-horniers. À leur âge d'or, au XIXe siècle, il y avait plus de 2 000 navires de ce type dans la flotte de commerce mondiale et, particulièrement en France, grâce aux voiliers à prime. L'ère de la propulsion mécanique a été fatale à la foule des anciens trois-mâts nombreux au début du XXe siècle, et les rares qui ont survécu le doivent à leur qualité de voiliers-écoles dans plusieurs marines militaires étrangères (par exemple : le Libertad, pour l'Argentine ou l'Amerigo Vespucci, pour l'Italie). Les plus anciens de ces bâtiments servent de bateaux musée et se visitent, comme le Duchesse Anne et ses sister-ships. Mais une partie de la flotte navigante contemporaine provient cette fois de nouveaux bâtiments, dont la construction a repris à partir des années 1980 (mais pas en France), avec notamment la majestueuse lignée du polonais Dar Młodzieży ou des répliques de trois-mâts plus anciens, tel le français Grand Turk (construit en Turquie). De Preußen had gedeelde bramzeilen, bramzeil en topbramzeil. Het schip voerde met 47 zeilen een totaal zeiloppervlak van 4650 m². Vandaag de dag varen er nog verschillende volschepen rond, meestal als zeevaartschoolschepen. De Amerigo Vespucci (Italië, 1931), de Dar Młodzieży (Polen, 1981) en de Mir (Rusland, 1988) zijn daar levende voorbeelden van. De laatstgenoemden varen allemaal mee in de recente Tall Ships' Races.
